Real-life stories of groups becoming stand-out teams
Software development (my own realm) is a team sport. But what differentiates a team from a group? And what differentiates a great team from a just-ok one? How can leaders – and team members themselves – enable their teams to be teams, not to mention great teams? Kobe Bogaert and Pam Fox Rollin and their team, having helped grow a ton of groups into teams, have answers. Insightful ones. Their realms are groups and teams of every kind – but they certainly apply to the realm I know.Growing Groups into Teams is not a recipe book – every great team requires its own unique recipe. But it IS a book of real-life stories – stories of groups, stories of what it took for each of those groups to become a team, and stories that point to specific and practical actions each of us can take to help our groups become teams and our teams become great.

Lovely to read and filled with practical guidance
“Growing Groups into Teams” is the first book I’ve ever read about building teams. And, honestly, I heard about the book only because one of the authors is a good friend. But regardless of that, I have to say I absolutely loved this book.First of all, it’s just so cool that a book about teams is written by a team. I love that the examples in the book are drawn from real experiences, so they engage you immediately. And I like that there’s plenty of guidance and advice for highest-level folks in organizations, rather than assuming they’re already perfect (because they’re not). There are really great chapters about the importance of trust, and about diversity (backgrounds, ages, locations, et al.). There’s even a chapter about the importance of body language in team building, and a lot more. If you’re looking to make your teams awesome, I’m absolutely certain this book will be a brilliant guide.

Harnessing the Power of Teams for Effective and Sustainable Impact
I’ve been leading groups and teams for over two decades, yet this book provided perspectives that I believe will greatly enhance my effectiveness. It is organized in essay format with different experts weighing in on the subject of team power and necessity. This allowed me to easily access information that I considered most relevant to the issue that I’m facing currently, while also introducing me to new and unexpected ways to think about the work. My favorite thing about this body of work, that is inherent in every essay I read, is the use of specific examples to illustrate the point – grounding theory in reality.Whether you are new to team development or have been doing it for years, I highly recommend this book. I believe you will find new perspectives that help you take your team work to its next level.

This book hits on all cylinders.. covering the viewpoints of the business, the individual, the leader, and the team. And it’s practical; It is not a cookbook but there are enough (understandable) signposts to guide someone on their next steps. As a former leadership coach and OD specialist in a Fortune 50 company, the cases and examples really resonated for me but I can also see how this would apply to small and medium enterprises as well. This book makes these techniques accessible to them, as the truths about people and teams that they discuss here are universal. Real-world examples of team-building success; NOT academic
I have always been far too busy as a leader and/or member of teams getting things done everyday to actually slow down and read a book about it. But this book was recommended to me, and it resonates with me deeply because it describes what I have been a part of when I work in teams. Which is virtually all the time! Some teams just get the work done, and some seem to soar and endure. This book does a great job of giving quite readable accounts of examples of how the best teams are built and maintained. It’s heavy on real stories and light on the academic theory, which always works for me. Good stuff in here!

A Scholarly Dissection of Team Dynamics and Interpersonal Excellence
In an era where the digital landscape seems to dominate every facet of our lives, it’s invigorating to come across a work that underscores the irreplaceable value of human interaction, coordination, and collaboration. “Growing Groups into Teams” isn’t just another treatise on team dynamics; it is a meticulously researched and beautifully articulated masterpiece on the very essence of what makes teams thrive.Drawing from vivid real-life stories, the authors unravel the complexities of transitioning from mere groups to high-performing teams. The chapter on Janine, for instance, serves as a poignant reminder that a collection of individuals does not a team make. Furthermore, the authors’ emphasis on the importance of trust, diverse backgrounds, and even the subtleties of body language offers fresh perspectives rarely found in conventional leadership literature.I was particularly impressed by the authors’ ability to seamlessly interweave practical advice with profound philosophical insights. The discussions on the future interplay between AI and human teams are not only timely but visionary, urging leaders to ensure that as we hurtle into a tech-dominated future, the essence of human collaboration isn’t lost. For anyone serious about not just forming, but truly understanding and nurturing teams, this book is a must-read. It stands as both a testament to and a manual for achieving interpersonal excellence in any organizational setting.

Team building pro-tips and pro-insights — and a great read, too
Teams are not boring. They are complex, unpredictable, and do-or-die for an organzation’s success. And this book brings to life the very real struggles of what teaming is all about.I loved the chapter about Janine, who inherited her *team*, only to find that it was actually just a group of unaligned folks. If you like vivid stories (case studies…yes!), this book will workfor you, including the offering of constructs, worksheets, philosophy, and specific steps to improving organizational effectiveness, empowerment, and results.Well done!

A toolbox for any leader who cares about building impactful, high-performing teams
This wisdom shared by this book gives the reader the tools and a lens to identify what’s working and not working in teams. This allows leaders to focus on building a culture that fosters high-performance teams. It also helps identify the roots of dysfunction so those can be handled in a constructive way.The book imparts its wisdom in a way that sticks in your mind and lingers. It does this mostly through the power of asking the right question. I found myself contemplating some of questions it posed for days, on-and-off again; questions like “what is the outcome we want to produce and by-when”, “what are we paying attention to”, and “what are we doing to build trust in the team”.It walks through the journeys other leaders have taken exploring those concepts in an easy, conversational manner. This makes this an enjoyable and easy read. All in all, I highly recommend this book to both new leaders and established ones – the wisdom it contains is timeless and I’m confident you’ll get value from it.

A great primer on team building and why it matters!
This is a very relevant book today, in the post-covid WFH days. It is very easy to forget that teams are not just groups of people in the same department, area or project. You have to be deliberate in the creation of a team (vs the much less effective group: “Teams produce bigger results more consistently than groups.”). Remote work, with all its benefits, is making teams much harder to create, and no less necessary. A key tener posited by the authors is that teams are, at their core, built for a common objective with the glue being conversations. Personal communication is what allows that disparate group to become a hard-working team. (“ The most fundamental action of team leaders and members is to choose which conversations to have and how and when to have them.”). The book gives great and specific tips and tools on how to create, manage, and grow highly effective teams. As a seasoned CEO I found many valuable lessons here and would recommend it to anyone that wants to get the best out of their organization.
