I was so excited to receive my copy of Dr. Suzanne Wertheim’s book, The Inclusive Language Field Guide. Too often, conversations about language focus on just wanting to learn the “correct” word to call something, but those words will likely change just as soon as you learn it. With Wertheim’s six principles of inclusive language, people will understand WHY it is important to always be open to learning new terminology versus just wanting to know WHAT the correct terminology is.

I think this book is going to have a good effect on a lot of people. The explanation of linguistic truths was very helpful, and I’m already using them in many areas of my life – for example, how technical terms are downgraded to pejorative terms, and end up being changed, only to be downgraded and changed again. And “language is like a fungus” and “language is social action” are so interesting and catchy. I also learned more about autism than I expected and it has helped me relate and be nonjudgemental.

It was nice to learn some of the reasons why using certain words is not inclusive. The book was easy to understand and it will be easy to apply the key takeaways! Definitely not a book just for DEI people.

“The Inclusive Language Field Guide” by Suzanne Wertheim shows that it doesn’t take much effort to be inclusive in your language, and demonstrates the best practices to ensure you are not inadvertently causing pain to someone with your word choices or actions.The book covers more than pronouns, including unconscious demoting, how to deal with ‘difficult’ names and how to comfortably address a person with a disability. The use of examples were particularly helpful and painted a picture that I couldn’t get out of my mind.This book is so needed. It deserves to be on the compulsory reading lists for teaching colleges and medical schools. I have learned a lot from this book that I can put into practice to help me consider the needs of people I come into contact with, making them feel comfortable and welcomed. This book is not only timely, but timeless as it takes. a positive approach with the understanding that words, phrases and communication styles not only have impact, but change over time. The messages are practical and easy understand and I think this is a must read for people who really care about taking a humanistic approach to getting along in today’s world.
