Best story teller in these streets. Love this book of hers too. I’ve read “Mother of Black Hollywood”, was fortunate enough to see her live at a book signing in LA.

Get ready for a whirlwind look inside Jenifer Lewis’s life. Not for the prudish, faint of heart reader and if you can’t stand 4 letter words, forget about it.

So many times when it comes to individuals in the public eye we feel as though we know them. Books like WALKING IN MY JOY: In These Streets by Jenifer Lewis show we never know what battles others have had to fight—and what it takes to actually win in life.We are able to see some of the defining moments for Ms. Lewis—good and bad—and what helped her to keep walking and choosing joy. This is the kind of book that will make you really appreciate those who have been able to rise and thrive. Success is not an easy thing, but Ms. Lewis shows that if you’re willing to walk in love instead of fear and not give up then you can make it.

I listened to the audio version of this book, the only way to read any memoir, in my opinion. What better way to learn Jennifer Lewis’s story than to hear it directly from her own mouth? What I loved about this memoir is that it began in the recent past, with Jennifer giving accounts of her life now. So many other memoir are chronological tellings that begin with childhood and end in some culmination of wisdom that has come with age. Jennifer gets real about joy and struggles in a relatable way that screams an indelible truth: no matter what we achieve and how close we come to our own best lives, we are all works in progress. This book really resonated with me. As a high-achieving Black woman who has reached the top echelons of my own career, I still experience the vicissitudes of life despite having “made it.” As an author, I appreciated all she had to say about the ups and downs of being an artist, especially a Black artist. Finally, as a neurodivergent person, I loved that she talked about her bipolar disorder, not as a deficiency or an obstacle, but as part of who she is.Five stars.

This book is a must read! This is Jennifer Lewis in the raw!I laughed cried and shook my head…. . She was sassy and full of herself …. But then that’s Jennifer Lewis. There were also some very thought provoking moments, that reminded and encouraged me, that as people of color we have to kept speaking our truths standing our ground for the future of our children !! As noted in her song “we got to save our children “Thanks Jennifer …we’ll done!!

Hilarious at times, heartbreaking at times, always witty and warm and full of loveliness. The Audible version is narrated by the author, who has a gorgeous voice. It also includes her singing, laughing, cursing, whispering, laughing – it is super entertaining. In the afterword, she offers us all a 10-second hug and you almost do feel it. An amazing lady with adventures that will have you on the edge of your chair, or about to fall off from laughing. When you get to the 10-foot tall Maasai warrior armed with a flashlight, you will know what I mean. Do not miss this book.

In Jenifer Lewis’ Walking in My Joy: In These Streets, this well-known actress shares her triumphs and pains as she journeys into the now. This second autobiography shows how she endured the pandemic lockdown by embracing special friends and even allowing family members to come and stay with her for a while. She balances her life through regular journaling, self-care, meditation, exotic trips and by diving into her activism when duty calls her. She is best known as the no-nonsense diva who speaks the truth. She is often the glue that holds others together in her many roles in sitcoms, television serials, Broadway plays and movies on the big screen.Walking in My Joy is a dialogue and a think-aloud for her readers as she speaks candidly about her life and her choices. It is filtered with poems and the book ends with pictures from places like Alaska, Antarctica and Kilimanjaro, to name a few. Jenifer Lewis’ life shows that hard work truly pays off!

This book was full of fun and at the same time very emotional. It was a roller coaster journey of key moments in the author’s life. Moments shared to bring back the compassionate humanity so many have stopped giving. This book gives a perspective of traumatic situations that have not been fully articulated by many A-list celebrities. Why the author is walking in her joy, I felt privileged to come along for the ride. It brought me great joy to witness.
