Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope for a Divided Country
New York Instances Bestseller

In a divided nation determined for unity, two sons of South Carolina present how totally different races, life experiences, and pathways can result in a deep friendship―even in a state that was rocked to its core by the 2015 Charleston church capturing.

Tim Scott, an African-American US senator, and Trey Gowdy, a white US congressman, gained’t permit racial strains to divide them. They work collectively, eat meals collectively, marketing campaign collectively, and make choices collectively. But within the fall of 2010―as two brand-new members of the US Home of Representatives―they didn’t even know one another. Their story as politicians and associates started the second they met and is a mannequin for others in search of true reconciliation.

In Unified, Senator Scott and Congressman Gowdy, via honesty and vulnerability, encourage others to judge their very own tales, clear the slate, and prolong a hand of friendship that may change your church buildings, communities, and the world.

I enjoyed the message and believe if we could get everyone to read it it would help bring our country together.I have given 4 copies of the book to friends. I have downloaded Trey’s new book but have not started it yet.

This book should be on every school’s recommended reading list. They discuss how you always have -something- in common with every person you meet…it may take a little time to figure out what that something is, but friendship comes about through conversation. We really need to hear this message!

I was intrigued to learn about these two men. I just hope they…in real life…perform as they allege in the book. Gowdy is a truth teller, but needs to change his stance on Trump. Scott on the other hand needs to continue to stand up to other gawd awful members of his party. He says he will in the book.

I have always admired Trey Gowdy as a straight shooter and respected Tim Scott as a Black HONEST Conservative. This book cements it ten times over. If all the politicians in Washington had their integrity, ethics and heart, government would be something to be admired not dreaded. Bravo to them both for a wonderful book. The source and depth of their friendship speaks volumes.

This book is a quick read with a positive message. I enjoyed insight into Tim Scott & Trey Gowdy’s personal relationship in the context of current events. These two are genuinely decent and humble men of integrity, virtually unheard of in politicians today. With his message of hope, Tim Scott has a bright future, as does Gowdy. Gowdy’s departure is a great loss, but I understand & wish him the best. I believe Gowdy when he describes friendships with people in Washington on the other side of the aisle. I wish more people would speak of unity and finding common ground. Gentlemen like this give me hope for the future of our Republic.

It’s interesting and edifying — NOT ABOUT POLITICS! Among other things, this revisits the twin horrors in Charleston as this is a conversation between these two men from South Carolina. It is a primer on how each of us can open our hearts and minds to those whom “politics” and current events tell us to ignore, mistreat, or vilify. Candid review of how and why their friendship began and grew through times that are ripping our nation apart, and concrete suggestions how each of us can “stand in the gap.” Ezekiel 22:30. This in conjunction to The Friendship Challenge” may help us be healers and helpers.

With people like this, a complete reassessment of Congress is in order. What has SC done to get these two? The only thing this book misses is how they could elect Lindsay Graham. Honor, humility, responsibility, and sound judgement. Wow! Just look what you get when you live in IL.

Upon arrival I placed this book on the top of my stack of ‘next to read’ material where it rested for 1 day. A genuine respect for both contributing authors in addition to an interest in the topic compelled me to purchase this book and I am in no way disappointed in the content which poured forth from each page. Seldom do I come across a book which holds me enough to read through in a single sitting… this was a one sitting read. Both gentlemen offer a humble and transparent look into their lives and the benefit of joining paths with one another. Insights offered provide plenty opportunity for self reflection and encourage the reader to ‘stand in the gap’ as opportunity affords.Truly a worthwhile purchase, highly recommended.

Uplifting book by a senator and a congressman from SC, both Republicans but one caucasian and one black. They each share portions in the book, describing their different backgrounds, the people whose lives influenced them, how they got to know each other in Congress, and became VERY close friends, both they and their families. Not all our legislators are “politicians” in the bad sense of the word, which this book certainly shows. It is published at a very appropriate time, when so many of our legislators hate the opposition and don’t understand how you can disagree and still be friends. The last few chapters get a little tedious, but this is a minor point.

This book is written by two men from very different backgrounds, but they have the most important thing in common. That is their relationship with Jesus Christ, and their decision to act in obedience to Him. I learned a lot about how to start a friendship with someone who is very different from me, and I was challenged to do that.

I read this book in one day and was inspired with every word. I have long admired both of these men but never knew they were such good friends. So often I have tried to say to family and others in our community, “quit looking to Washington to solve all our problems. Start with your neighbor, colleagues, start local!” I am so sad that Congressman Goudy is not seeking reelection, because he is one of the good guys in Washington. After learning so much more about him (and Senator Scott) I can totally understand how frustrating it must be to try to do what is right in such a toxic environment. Our country is great and there is good all around, even in Washington. Senator Scott has his work cut out for him. I pray that God continues to guide him and that others in our capital will listen!

Lessons in true non-discrimination for us all. These two exceptional men from a small state might never have met had it not been for politics. Yes, even the dark cloud of politics can have a silver lining. By the way, it isn’t that uncommon for a black man and a white man in SC to be friends – each just has to accept the other as equals and to respect each others’ rights to different opinions sometimes.

Book is okay with many positive things said, but I was perhaps overly optimistic for an effective incentive to bring opinion tolerance and broader unification on a large scale in today’s political climate. Perhaps two friends from opposite parties can take a crack at this goal someday, but this book is a fine read with value and I hope these two and others keep trying. And I won’t give up the hope for opinion tolerance, broader perspectives, and a less divided country.

My liberal wife always bad-mouthed Trey Gowdy because of the Benghazi hearings. But everytime I saw him on TV over the past year, I found I agreed with a lot of what he said. I didn’t know too much about Tim Scott. But I saw these guys promoting their book and decided to read it. I wanted to like this book and its authors.I also root many of the major themes in the book: friendship, inclusion, open-mindedness, acceptance of others, looking at things from the viewpoint of others, etc.But their unending bromance stories get a little tired after a while, I get it, they really like each other. I get it, they support each other, I get it, they spend a lot of time together. That being said, I really like them each personally more after reading this book. We definitely need more politicians like they present themselves here. These guys seem extraordinarily admirable. I wish I loved the book rather than just found it to be OK.

I liked the positive approach that the authors challenged the reader to use in engaging others to discuss the things that cause us to think we are divided, find common ground by establishing a relationship and how to work toward better outcomes. They write a very candid and very personal story of their journey through this process and the friendship that blossomed.

I’m a 60 year old woman with an intellectual crush on Trey Gowdy. He is so eloquent. If possible (which of course it’s not) my bucket list would include being able to speak on any subject as passionately as he does. He breaks things down so the law or the process is understandable. This should be required reading for both our house and senate members. I quote Tim and Trey all the time–we have to find a starting place to be able to talk to each other. This book is great but sadly I thought it would include more inside tidbits, ok, gossip. These guys are good and I felt bad that they really are. I’m a terrible person for wanting salacious stories.

If your daily meal of consuming politics includes a main course of divisiveness, bread buttered with contempt, and a dessert of stand your ground tribalism, this read may not be for you. Or… maybe this book is exactly for you! The Senator and Congressman express well the value and meaning of integrity, hope, and character, while navigating the fiery friendship furnace of DC. I loved this book which was written by my Senator, Tim Scott and a S C congressman who I have the greatest admiration for, Trey Gowdy. It is a quick read, but very thought provoking and insightful. It is a unique behind the scenes look at the workings of political Washington from the perspective of two honorable men who supported each other emotionally through the ups and downs of their political careers. There were several times when their story brought tears to my eyes, especially when they talk about the horrible Charleston church shooting which really affected all of us in South Carolina. This book is a pleasant departure from most that are written about Washington and left me inspired.
