Matt Abrahams is my friend and Stanford colleague. He has distinguished himself as an authority on the techniques and skills needed to overcome the natural fear we all have of public speaking. In this wonderful book he weaves personal stories and expert advice into a book that you will keep and reread over time. The genius of this book is its clear organization and practical advice. His: “TRY THIS” exercises produce results. Many books promise “the way to overcome your anxiety.” Matt delivers. His Stanford course “Improvisational Speaking” has a waiting list. Now, we don’t have to wait. Buy this creative and useful book and follow the advice. It might change your life.

Wow. This book is seriously dense. It weaves in and out between tips and tools, personal anecdotes, and exercises and steps … one after another after another. At times there was so much information to take in that I felt a bit overwhelmed and had to take a lot of reading breaks. It’s just jammed with that much “content.”The real challenge for me will be taking the time to practice and implement what’s in it.As an afterthought, I recommend bookmarking the pages/tips that that you want to practice or implement as you’re reading the book for the first time, so it’s easy to go back afterwards.Really enjoyed this book. Well written. Easy to read. Enjoyable flow between stories and techniques.

This book has already paid for itself. It’s got so many actionable tips that I am putting to use in conversation at home and at work. The funny thing is that I thought of myself as pretty good at thinking on my feet, small talk, winging it, etc but reading this book taught me concrete tools on how to take it to another level. It’s easy and entertaining to read, too!

In the two weeks since buying Matt’s book, I’ve used his advice – successfully – in high level meetings at work to somewhat confrontational interactions with a neighbor and everyone in between. This book is not only great for advancing your career or better advocating for your passions, but it also gives you a foundation upon which to communicate in every aspect of your life. Well done Matt!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in strengthening the skills needed to communicate effectively. Before reading this book, I tended to teach, rambling on thinking I was helping by adding details. As Matt’s mother said, “Tell me the time, don’t build me the clock.” I had never heard it put that way, but I’ve heard “Get to the point” more times than I’d like to admit. This book has saved my loved ones and clients by putting me on a disciplined path of clear, concise speech. Among other things, I really found Matt’s ‘What – So What – Now What’ framework to be useful. The book brings to mind a quote attributed to Leonardo DaVinci: Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Just got done reading and found valuable insights on effective communications, here are a few that really resonated with me:- Understand your audience: Tailor your message by considering your audience’s knowledge level, attitudes, concerns, and motivations.- Be concise: Focus on your message’s relevance and goal. Avoid overloading with unnecessary information.- Embrace emotion: Storytelling, analogies, engagement, and active listening can invoke emotions in your audience, making your message more impactful.- Deal with senior leaders: When speaking to higher-ups, put the “bottom line up front.” Senior leaders appreciate clarity and brevity.- Manage presentation anxiety: Matt shared tips like deep belly breathing, identifying sources of anxiety, and learning from past experiences to reduce anxiety before presentations.
