While the author’s medical screw ups were truly horrendous , to some extent this incompetence happens to most of us.His story is truthful, funny, tragic but so believable. My husband had heart trouble , from Agent Orange in Vietnam . After surgery he coded so many times a day they stopped announcing it so I wouldn’t know. But I did. Once they lost him for 14-15 minutes. The nurse took me in a room & told me about brain damage being almost certain when sone Ive is gone for that amount of time .He got a pacemaker & defibrillator. It fired 10 or more times a day , back in the hospital , over & over. His batteries wore out quickly as it fired so much .He had many replacements. Finally his doctor designedone especially for him. When he passed away they told me to throw it away as it couldn’t be used for anyone else. His name was Dr Carey Fredman. The best heart surgeon possible , so patient , returned calls himself at 2 AM & states online with me for about 2 hours while we waited to see if it was ok.He’s the only one of his heart surgeons who called me personally the night he died to offer condolences .His being so good made the incompetence of so many other medical personnel look even worseI know from the experience every word Fred Rutman writes is the truth. If you haven’t gone through the experience tour tend to think he was exaggerating .I can tell you that he is not .It’s wonderful for him to give us his story , it had to be hard to relive it. It will help a lot of people. It’s a very interesting book, I read it in one sitting , I imagine everyone does.Read it, you won’t be sorry .Also, looking I to IF!Thanks , Fred. I wish you the best of health for the rest of your long life.

I was captivated by Fred’s story and struggles. His dermination to survive and persevere is inspiring. He had me laughing, but laughing with him not at him. Koodos to him for pulling through and writing this book in order to help others better advocate for themselves within the medical system in country. Stay well Fred!

I absolutely loved this book. Since I also have a pace maker and Han to have a wire adjusted I knew what he was talking about. I will definitely read another book written by the author.

You wouldn’t think that reading about someone’s (extreme, horrifying, painful) medical travails would have you laughing throughout this book, but I did just that. Intermittently, I cringed at all that Fred went through. His talent for nicknaming everyone was hilarious, and he somehow wove in bon mots with stories of hellacious medical blunders. Fred is sold on intermittent fasting, something I have done for several years, but not to the extent that he has (mine is more 8 window, 16 fast). It does make a difference, and I am happy that it helped him. Sounds weird, but I haven’t laughed so much in a long time reading a book – especially one filled with medical horror stories. I think for me, this was a first. I wish Fred nothing but good health from now on – he’s been through enough!!!

Is he Lazarus come back to life? Fred has more than 9 lives, he has 20. This is also an expose on socialized medicine… I can’t believe Fred had to go through all that and yet he is still positive and wants to help others. I almost shed a tear several times. This book inspires all those with a pulse.

I found this book to be interesting, informative and funny. Fred manages to keep his sense of humor dispite the many screw ups he encountered on his medical journey. He gave me ideas about what to say when faced with an incorrect diagnosis . I also learned a lot about intermittent fasting and it’s many benefits. Thank you for sharing your journey with so much humor.
