“The Grasp Plan is much less of a street map and extra of a philosophy that we should always all take to coronary heart: We’re all higher than our worst resolution, our sense of justice ought to honor the redemptive potentialities inherent in each individual, and our destinies are actually intertwined.”–Wes Moore, creator of The Different Wes Moore
Rising up in Washington, DC, Chris Wilson was surrounded by violence and despair. He watched his household and neighborhood shattered by trauma, and he misplaced his religion. One evening when he was seventeen, defending himself, he killed a person. He was sentenced to life in jail with no hope of parole.
However what ought to have been the tip of his story grew to become the start. Behind bars, Wilson launched into a exceptional journey of self-improvement–reading, understanding, studying languages, even beginning a enterprise. At nineteen, he sat down and wrote a listing of all of the issues he meant to perform, and all of the steps he’d must take to get there. He referred to as it his Grasp Plan. He revised that plan frequently and adopted it religiously. Sixteen years later, it led him to an unlikely opportunity–and to a promise he has been working onerous to reside as much as each day since. Harrowing, heartbreaking, and finally triumphant,
The Grasp Plan is a memoir for this second, proving that each individual is able to doing nice issues.

I got this book as research. I’m starting a new chapter in life, helping returning citizens with future planning, and I thought the book might provide nuggets and content to help me help others. In reading this book, I have cried, rejoiced, gasped and celebrated as if I personally know Chris Wilson and everyone in his story. His life is one to marvel at for sure. There is so much hope and inspiration offered to the reader. Determination and grit don’t really come close to explaining the results of his success because there were so many obstacles, too many; so much of the deck was stacked against him yet he prevailed. No…this is about more than having an endgame, a plan and working that plan. Chris Wilson has a calling on his life. His life story is amazing! Now it’s time for me to get my Masterplan in place.

What an incredible first book by Chris Wilson. In the courageous act of sharing his story and himself he shows all of us the power and potential of change; he models for us all and inspires a rare type of personal growth and self investigation; he challenges us to see ourselves in new lights as we are taken on his journey, and to consider the chances we give others. And through all of this, he tells an amazing and honest story that’s hard to put down.

Wow! What a remarkable man! Chris Wilson talks the talk and walks the walk. I read this book in four days, and my 15-year-old son read it in two days. (I took his phone. This was a requirement to get the phone back.) He never complained though.Just when I thought that Michelle Obama wrote the best Memoir of the 21st Century, here comes Chris Wilson with a close second. Two antithetical stories with an awe-inspiring parallel message of hard work, dedication, discipline, and perseverance.Chris Wilson grew up surrounded by poverty, gangs, police brutality, and witnessing his mother being domestically abused. As a young teenager, he became a product of his environment on the mean streets of D.C.. He was ultimately charged as an adult as a teenager, and sentenced to life in Prison at ”Patuxent” Penitentiary. This is where his growth would begin. We often hear the saying ”whatever you choose to do in life, be the best that you can be.” Well, Chris Wilson took that message to heart and became the best prisoner that anyone could ever be. In prison, he managed to let go of the anger, took responsibility for his actions, didn’t make excuses, found a mentor, created a master plan, and stuck to it. He educated himself, learned several languages, and inspired other fellow inmates to follow in his footsteps. After his release, he stuck to his masterplan and put his money where his mouth is by returning to the community that he helped to decimate. He started businesses, created jobs, continued his education and is continuously giving back to his community. This man is doing so much until I can’t keep up. Is the penal system broken? Absolutely. However, this man keeps going. At one point, I just wanted to reach inside the book, give him a hug and say, ” that’s enough my brother, you’ve done more than enough.” But I doubt very seriously if he’d quit.Michelle Obama and Chris Wilson are my new heroes. They both make me want to be smarter, and they make me go out into the community and do more.Thank you, Mr. Wilson, for this inspirational piece. Now I have to ask the readers, ”what’s you masterplan? What’s your End game?

So much insight into how broken our justice system is and how returning citizens are dehumanized and victimized while serving their time and even after they have served their time. America truly needs to invest in honest quality rehabilitative efforts and returning our citizens to communities of support with expectations of betterment for having spent time in prison focused on reform and self improvement.Mr. Wilson has shown us where and how to begin…

I love this author’s awesome story, which I originally saw on the Today Third Hour – my new favorite show. I admit that all I cared about was the list of books he read as he worked hard to turn his life around. If you have a list in your book about anything, I’ll probably purchase it. Thank you. But it’s much more than just a list, it’s a life guide and about taking the worst possible issues people can experience and rising from that and HOW one did so. I think so many books like this lack that how, what, who, where, when… the why is evident. So many do not have even mediocre lives once experiencing incarceration but this man is an exception and is telling you how. What a great story.
Memyself Andeye –
A captivating, informative yet quick read. It describes how broken the notion of prison rehab has devolved, and shows how indifferent and uninterested prison and court officials are regarding redemption for (especially) teen offenders, who are largely victims of poor family and economic conditions. This book should be required reading for all persons associated with the prison industrial complex in this country.
C. Smiley. –
Loved the book reading to my students in prison. Hope it helps them set up a master plan for themselves & work it so they don’t return. They really like the book too.

This book is incredibly uplifting. It is an authentic account of a child sentenced to life in prison, and how that child grew into a man who found life’s purpose through education, and the help of others. The power of books and education have never been more true. This is a story of one mans journey, but really it’s the life experience of so many people in our nations prisons. This will make you think about prison reform, and specifically about reforming the way we overpunish “violent” youthful offenders.
Guy M. Newland –
Wilson’s well-written story shows the circumstances that led to his being in prison and the way great determination and skill, but also luck led to his being liberated. The implication is that many others are just as worthy of another chance but never get it.

This is a must read for those interested in our system of justice and how it treats youthful offenders convicted of serious offenses. It is a very well written memoir by a young man who was sent away for life at age 17 and how he found the strength, courage and perseverance to survive and overcome the many obstacles in a path he created leading toward his own redemption. It is an inspiring tale of a teenager who grew into a responsible force in a community that needed him.

This is an incredible autobiography! Mr. Chris Wilson’s story was recommended to me by a student I work with who is currently incarcerated. This young man related so much to this story and shared it with me on multiple levels. I have since bought, read and shared this book with other students, professionals, and family members. Mr. Wilson’s book has been the most impactful book I’ve read it more than 5 years. As a Maryland native and University of Baltimore alum, I’m proud to walk on the same campus as this inspiring man! I plan to continue sharing this book with as many people as I can. Mr. Wilson puts a voice and face to the need for criminal justice reform.

A remarkable man with a remarkable story. Indomitable spirit, perseverance, and focus overcoming terrible odds. Written plainly and with humility, this is a real-life example of the power of optimism in the face of adversity. I highly recommend it.

When you haven’t grown up in systemic poverty or been subject to institutional neglect at every turn, it’s conveniently easy to ascribe values and render judgement on those who have not been as fortunate. What’s harder is to understand how this can happen and admit that your worldview may not be as complete as you once thought. Even more difficult is recognizing how society chooses to label an entire segment of the population as broken and unredeemable. Chris’s story challenges those notions at every turn and will force you to re-examine how you view our criminal justice system. In the few short years that Chris has been home, he has accomplished what many achieve in a lifetime, if at all. He’s done it on his own merits and with a drive and sense of purpose that is truly inspiring. The best part is that he’s only getting started. It would be easy to see Chris as an aberration, that one-in-a-million who actually made good. The reality is that there are hundreds of thousands more Chris’s and Christines in our society, just waiting for the opportunity to prove that they have learned, grown, and are eager to make a positive contribution to their world. After reading Chris’ book, you will never be able to dismiss “those people” again. They are us and we are them.

Learning what Wilson made of his life yet he had been dealt a bad hand gives me a better appreciation of what I have been given and all the things I take for granted. If someone from his circumstances can make something of his life and help others then I should do so much more with my life than what I am doing right now.
Tiffanie Okereke –
This book is the poster child for overcoming adversity. Through all of his struggles, Chris Wilson persevered through the darkest, most difficult times of his life and came out victorious, all while creating an empire and being the positive change that returning citizens so desperately need in this country. From prison to emancipation, this book takes the reader on the emotional journey of a man, sentenced to life in prison, from childhood to adulthood. Truly a must read!

I heard Chris Wilson on the Karen Hunter show on Urban View Radio. He was inspiring and it made me hopeful for the future of at risk teens. I had to buy his book. I actually bought four copies to pass along.I read this book today, in one day. I could not put it down. This book shows humanity and it is raw. It is real and makes you want to do better. This man is remarkable and it truly shows God’s grace and how he can change things.Chris does not really talk about God in the book but it is a Miracle. This book shows the impossible can happen and there are angels along the path that help and support the process. This is a must read.

So much more than a spectacular story of redemption. So much more than a treatise on a broken justice system. “The Master Plan” is an important book for every American to read. Will be recommending to my book club and every reader I know. Heck, I’ll recommend it to strangers, too. This book should win the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction.

Professor Davis at UTA, had us read this book and give a response every week for our institution correction class fall 2019,and I will say this was my best class and the class that I learnt most from in terms of realistic life lessons. Chris Wilson walked us through his life in prison and life after. When reading the book I had both happy and not so happy tears, as he took us through his best and worst moments. I would recommend all the young boys especially in junior high to read this as one of their literature recommendation for social studies. Thank You Chris for inspiring me to be better and ENCOURAGING me to have a plan for my life….”THE MASTER PLAN” …looking forward to your other books and the movie OFCOURSE!!

This is not only a memoir about how a self-driven person can get through a very bad situation, redeemed himself, but also our terrible justice system which does less to rehabilitate offenders but perpetuate injustice and waste a huge amount of tax money without providing more security and welfare for all.

The story is incredible and truly inspiring! We all have a lot to learn from Chris Wilson.
Melinda –
This may be the most inspiring book I’ve ever read. I bought it to gain more insight into the American prison system. It does that; it demonstrates the human corruption that exists, and illustrates the way the system tries to keep the convicted behind prison walls, while showing the way some prisoners band together to better their lives. But the account of prison life only adds context to this story. As the title attests, it’s really about the author’s Master Plan, and how the faith and effort he put into reclaiming his future transformed him from a hopeless lifer to a free, successful business owner and agent of change in his community. This book demonstrates how to take control of your life and work towards your dream by example, rather than through empty rhetoric. It will give you insight into prison life, and the life of poor blacks, but this book hones in on the capacity we have to create unimaginable change in our own lives most of all. Everyone should read this book.

I was first introduced to this book as a class assignment for my Institutional corrections course. At first when I purchased the book I saw it only as a class assignment. Quickly after the introduction I knew this book and Chris Wilson’s story was going to stick with me years after I graduate. Chris’s story is about persistence, hard-work, tenacity and faith in himself when the system wrote him off as a “lifer.” I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

Chris Wilson has written a heart rending and deeply inspirational book. This book should be mandatory reading in the juvenile justice system. Life changing for anyone who reads it. Bravo!
James Woods –
This is a terrific book. The determination and focus demonstrated by Chris Wilson is unbelievable. All while in challenging settings of broken homes and communities of his youth, and the prison in his late teen and young adulthood. I was immensely inspired to reach higher in my own life while also start looking closely at the topics of fair and just punishment, treatment of the incarcerated, and redemption, renewal, and hope for good people that society seemingly wants to forget.
Michael F. –
Through three parts, Chris Wilson weaves you through the trauma, adversity, and outright systemic failure that he has faced throughout his life. To that end, the level of inspiration and empathy it has the ability to create, especially for those who are not as aware of the depths of trauma operating in our society, is massive. Even bigger than the learnings in how faulty and filled with cracks our system is, are Chris Wilson’s prescription which he calls the Master Plan, that I believe will be a scalable plan for those other Chris’ out there who might be in his shoes but not have been given a pathway to a life they had been told they couldn’t have. This book isn’t just an inspiring story, it has the ability to entirely change the way humans who read it journey through life.

I loved the book!

Bought a copy for myself and for my cousin who is currently 17 years into a life sentence. He went to prison at 18 and his story is very similar to Mr. Wilson’s. He reached out to me to ask for my help in getting paroled in a few years and I needed some advice as I had no idea how to go about it. The book is not just a road map for that, but I, who has never been in the system, found principles that could be applied to my life as well. Great job Chris, thank you.

A must read for all. Inner city youth for inspiration, suburban families for understanding, lawmakers for compassion.

Once I started this book, I was hooked. Mr. Wilson’s story is yet another reminder of the trials and obstacles associated with growing up in poverty, as well as the unequal treatment that is so entrenched in systems that are allegedly meant for rehabilitation. But the best part of this book was the message that hope springs eternal.
Guy M. Newland –
Wilson’s well-written story shows the circumstances that led to his being in prison and the way great determination and skill, but also luck led to his being liberated. The implication is that many others are just as worthy of another chance but never get it.

Speaks volumes about how prison systems everywhere have become a revolving door as inmates keep returning time and time again! Rather than just arresting someone and throwing them in a cell where they can learn how to be a better criminal. Why not while incarcerated give them the opportunity to learn and receive their GED and learn a skill they can carry with them when they get released to make better choices for themselves. If you put them in a box for 6 to 18 months then throw them back out on the street you can’t expect someone to do anything different. But you teach them so they can take care of themselves then things might be different! I think the prison system is afraid to train inmates because then they might get out, get a job and not come back to jail. Then the prison system would be out of a job. This book explains this so well, even though it does get a little political but it is only briefly and then it gets back to the real reason for the book. Which is to help someone learn a skill and they will be able to make better choices when they are out on the street!
