Please bear with me; my preamble is long but necessary.My wife and I grew up near Gettysburg. We went to the battlefield and its associated museums several times a year for recreation, experienced several walking tours, and had the hardest-core Civil War buffs for Social Studies and History teachers that you can imagine. My wife spent much of her teenage years in the living history reenactment community, participating in living history clubs, the big reenactments, and “period-set” parties for some of the area’s aficionados. We experienced the museum’s electronic maps before it was torn down.We both, if anyone, should have a good working knowledge of where things happened, in what order, and why.Now we do.This one-hour special is the absolutely most successful device we’ve experienced to actually enable you to visualize these things. We finally “get it”. And Mr. Boritt achieved this without the distraction of a single live-action reenactor, using voiceovers and camera drones to take you there in your mind.To be clear, there is a LOT of missing detail in this piece, but that’s okay. This is a 1 hour “overview”. Much of the detail we already knew spontaneously came to mind during this documentary but, for the first time, with good solid context and understanding.The only negative was how thoroughly this documentary incorrectly implied how very much the war was about Slavery for the average soldier, and even for most of the southern senior officers. This has been thoroughly debunked.Still, Bravo. This documentary is great for what it is.

This is one of the best productions I have watched regarding the 3 days of fighting at Gettysburg. Although for those with knowledge of the battle, it may seem there is not much new, but I so disagree. Just the presentation alone was worth the watching. Not only is it visually wonderful, but the personal stories recounted during the viewing were so interesting. For me it made the battle so much more human in the telling. A different presentation than I have seen before, but definitely excellent.. I have been to Gettysburg several times, and each time I discover more about this battle that changed the course of the Civil War. The DVD provided further enlightenment. Just wonderful!!

It really is true when they say you’re seeing the battle and battlefield in a way you’ve never seen it before. In a one hour presentation it’s impossible to do the three days complete justice, but the method of presentation more than makes up for that. In the Gettysburg Story you get the feeling you’re really there. You see and feel the terrain, most especially the difficulty the Confederate forces faced in assaulting Little Round Top, the folly of Sickles’ displacement of his troops, and the long, arduous, and disastrous field of attack on the third day. All in all, this is an excellent presentation of the battle of Gettysburg, and a very helpful tool for the student of the battle to have.

In my opinion its up there with Ken Burns and the movie. Gettysburg. One can always find something thatthey would like to have seen. For me that would have been the Railroad Cut on the first days battle. Being from Wisconsin and read countless memoirs this ommision is not unusual. After the war some veterans made a real effort to show its importance.i took the audio tour on one trip and felt like it was very incomplete. So if this film is based on that i can understand a bit more about my issue with that. Its only my opinion. I recommend if you have the time you walk through the park. see more monuments.and get the feel of the battlefield especially walking across Picketts Charge to the copse of trees. Aside from all that i love this film. It makes the Park come alive.. Highly recommended!

We enjoyed the presentation of the battle in human terms as well as battle decisions by commanders. Too many historians have analyzed battles in terms of what the generals decided and little else. While this is of paramount importance, we need to feel the emotions, the pain, the sacrifices that go into any battle. I ordered this DVD after I had visited the battlefield, and it was right on point. I own several Gettysburg DVD’s and this is by far the best one. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who is interested in the battle. It was money well spent.
