The Animator’s Survival Kit: A Manual of Methods, Principles and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion and Internet Animators

The definitive e-book on animation, from the Academy Award-winning animator behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Animation is among the hottest areas of filmmaking today–and the grasp animator who bridges the previous technology and the brand new is Richard Williams. Throughout his fifty years within the enterprise, Williams has been one of many true innovators, profitable three Academy Awards and serving because the hyperlink between Disney’s golden age of animation by hand and the brand new pc animation exemplified by Toy Story.

Maybe much more essential, although, has been his dedication in passing alongside his information to a brand new technology of animators in order that they in flip might push the medium in new instructions. On this e-book, primarily based on his sold-out grasp courses in america and throughout Europe, Williams gives the underlying ideas of animation that each animator–from newbie to professional, traditional animator to pc animation whiz –needs. Urging his readers to “invent however be plausible,” he illustrates his factors with a whole lot of drawings, distilling the secrets and techniques of the masters right into a working system with a purpose to create a e-book that may turn out to be the usual work on all types of animation for professionals, college students, and followers.

I had the original version of this when I was in college. It was a required text, and I soon understood why. So when I got the chance to get my hands on a copy of the expanded version I saved my pennies! I was not disappointed. I wish there was a more expanded portion in regards to character design basics, but with how much is in this book that is a Minor complaint. This touches on topic that I struggled with in college (timing and smoother, more believable tweens).OH! the pages are already showing signs of wear because of how much I reference it on any given animation-based project! So far the binding has held up, which is very important to me.

This is by far the most complete ANIMATION book. Many new books have used concepts of this book to explain the fundamentals of animation, so why get those books when you can get the original source? It covers ALL, the examples are clean and clear, surely the best book I’ve bought for animation.BTW, yes, Richard William is mad, he goes through every concept so thoroughly and methodically , getting the best out of each movement. You should really see how does details really boost the quality in the animation. Also, his DVD’s are great too, highly recommended for anyone out there!

I Love this book so much!I’m currently a computer animation student at Full Sail University and I’ve have a number of teachers/instructors recommend this book to us. It’s definitely worth the buy. There are so many detailed illustrations and examples to learn from. The book is physically bigger than what I expected, but even that is great!Wish I had bought this sooner!100/10 😁

Beautiful big volume, well illustrated. Bought for an art student of animation, and turns out it was a required text for her upcoming semester. She was impressed with it and excited to delve into it, even before she knew it was a required text.

came in perfect condition aside from 2 tiny marks on the front + a slight wedge in the corner but its barely noticable & tiny lol.was a little nervous because theres both the EXPANDED EDITION (the one i bought) and like 4 little booklet versions across amazon. IF YOU’RE EVER IN DOUBT OF WHICH YOU’RE BUYING (or are just really anxious like me), check the example pages (if available) and the description that tells you the print length (392 pgs) for clarification.i got the paperback cause it was on sale & ive been looking at this for a while, but honestly i’d recommend buying the spiral! it’d make looking at the pages alot easier lol

I purchased this for my Grandson, an artist, studying to go into animation professionally, with a creative company,. Having been impressed with what I saw of this book, I purchased it for him for his Birthday. Only after he received it, did he share with me that he already had this book and considered it his “Bible” as an animator and college student. Therefore, we can highly recommend it as a valued tool for all who wish to go professional.

This is one of the single most best things I have ever bought…I am not a book person, but when it comes to a subject that I am very interested I will be all over it. This book is amazing and gives such interesting details, facts, history, and everything else you can think about for all of you fellow animators out there… very inspirational. I am an animator myself, but I bought this book to help me along the way of my beginning stages and I believe this book will help me a lot for what I plan on doing…If you are curious on how this book is helping me you can see my animations on my new youtube channel HumorWiseSurprise … I will be posting toons very shortly after reading the rest of the book!

My 12 year old grandson is interested in computer games development and animation design so I had asked ICT grads with an interest in this area which book or magazine etc would be a good start or ongoing instruction. The Animator’s Survival Kit was recommended and when it arrived I realised it was very comprehensive and although more suitable for an older person this is something he can work on and keep forever. It is fun, easy to understand and shows how much work and practice is needed to become really good at animation. This is the bible and like the Bible, not everyone will read it from front to back, they may keep coming back to the bits that interest them until they eventually have a good knowledge of the subject. Well presesnted and fun and usefull – unlike the other bible.

I just got this for my 11 year old son for Christmas. I haven’t read it, but it looks awesome. If my son had an attention span and made some effort, I think he could easily read it. But he’s lazy, so we’ll see how that goes. In any event. If it takes him a few years to get thru. That’s fine. It looks like a really good book. It’s not some small ebook. It’s a real, thick book with real professional information and not hard to comprehend. I recommend.

I don’t know how useful this would be to a professional but as a complete amateur this book is great. This should be the first book on animation you buy if your looking to see what different animation cycles should look like. Unless you don’t want your kids seeming cartoon women animation cycles this kid is very kid friendly in the way it explains how things work. The book is full of animation cycles and explains in layman terms why things are they way they are. I’m very impressed with this as a hobbist this is just what I wanted.

There’s even over a hundred pages just on showing and teaching you how to animate walking! This is great, especially if your children show one piece of an iota of drawing skills. They can learn how from this book and become better at drawing and animation. I didn’t know how to draw, but this book taught me. A child wouldn’t even have to know how to read; that’s how simple the book can be. This is a book your child can learn from, forever, as well as adult novices.

All I will say is if you’re an animation student, buy it.This book goes over the basic tenets of animation, and several things your instructors will drill into your head. My 3d animation teacher tells us three things when we start our projects, and that is “Reference, reference, reference.”This book is worth its weight in gold if you are an animation student. Buy it. You will not regret it.

I teach University Figure Drawing and was looking for clarity on how an animator really thinks. I found a treasure trove of history, personal narratives from the artist’s soul, mixed with step by step instructions on how it all worked. This guy is amazing. I could not put this down.If you are really focused on learning how to move the figure, and analyze movement, this is for you. If you are new at this, take beginning drawing first, and figure drawing first. This is not a quick ‘easy’ book for beginners, but for a more seasoned artist. What a huge gift to share a lifetime of wisdom.

A first part book is full of information about professional animator’s workflow.A second part is full of illustrations and advices on how to model a human body, for example. It’s hard to list all the things that appear inside in this book, since it’s full of knowledge from start page to the final page. For all who wants to start animating properly, to know about proper timings, about how human body works and how to animate it, and more and more and more.Don’t forget about the fact that this book has an iPad twin as an application, if you want to go digital and it’s also great and full-dynamic.

The seller had a good communication, and honest. I got this even cheaper from the seller since he was being a honest person telling me there is a little minor problem on this book. So, he told me about it prior he was about to ship the book, and I was totally okay with it. When it was delivered, actually the book is just fine as good. The cut in the corner of book were not serious at all. It was not bothering me at all; I just simply taped it. So far, I am using this book just fine for my art studio class.

Awesome book to understand how animation works. The history/biography, in the beginning, was a little boring. But once I got past that, it was really good. I have been spending most of my time learning how animation software works from Adobe and Toon Boom Harmony (personal fave). And this book really fills all the holes on how animation works. I’m about 1/3 of the way done with the book already. I will have to update when done…but so far…I love it!

As a budding animator, reading this book was extremely helpful in thinking about animation in a different way from one of the pros.A lot went over my head as I’m a digital animator and a lot of the tips and tricks were more specifically for traditional, hand-drawn, cel animation, but the techniques are still extremely handy. The book is also quite easy to read. And not just because the language isn’t overly complicated or technical. It’s just a joy to sit down and study. Not dry at all and doesn’t feel like a textbook.Absolutely recommend for anyone who wants an offline guide for animation techniques.

Richard Williams is a man who is largely responsible for the revival of the art of animation in the early 1970s. Williams had Disney animator Art Babbitt and Warner great Ken Harris working in his studio in London and training a new generation of animators in the techniques of good character animation, which was not taught at the time in any school or considered an art form.Williams’ long awaited book on animation technique is the logical successor to Preston Blair’s CARTOON ANIMATION and it successfully updates some of the weaknesses of that book, particularly in handling dialogue animation. He covers a lot of the same ground that Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston did in their now out-of-print THE ILLUSION OF LIFE.There is some history, but that’s available in other books. What is unique about this book is that Williams writes how surprised he, an Academy Award winning animator with a successful professional studio, was to learn that he needed to learn just about everything over again from Harris and Babbitt. Fortunately for us he is now sharing these priceless lessons with the public. The most important thing that an aspiring animator will get from this book is: that animation IS an art form, and good animation has nothing to do with whether it is done on computer or on paper. Williams exhorts his readers to ‘draw whenever possible’ and even though there is a computer modelled figure on the cover of the book, there is not a single piece of computer generated imagery in it. The book is about the bare bones, about creating life in art. Animation is the twentieth century’s contribution to world art and deserves to be taken very seriously.Buy this book.

My daughter is an aspiring animator who went through a high school of the arts. Hoping to attend an art college, but they are too pricey, she did some research and found a suggestion online from an animator giving advice to a student who was not accepted by the animation college he desired. He suggested this book.My daughter was accepted, they are just too expensive. She got this book and loved it. Some of it she was proud she had taught herself and knew already, but she definitely learned more even though she has gone through a high school of the arts and did a summer college art program at a university of the arts.Another person we know, who taught himself how to animate and was working for Disney with no training, also recommended this book.So the book comes highly recommended by people who are actually in the field.

I went to school for animation; and needed a refresher as I transition into a new position. One of my previous instructors recommended this book to us our first year; so far I’m half way through and its brought back a wealth of knowledge I had tucked away long ago in favor of software shortcuts. If you’re a beginner animator I would certainly recommend this book there are great breakdowns of walk cycles in it.

This is an amazing book!!! I cannot see why anyone would give this book less than a five. For the people out there that have never attempted to do an animation or find it very difficult and though if they bought this book they would be able to instantly do it with minimal effort. I’m sorry to say, the answer is No; animation is a difficult yet extremely underrated skill that most people assume to be easy. This book helps you with some of the steps to make a lot of the common animations you may encounter (Lip syncing was very helpful). It is more of a tool or reference guide to help you out during the animation process; It will not do the work for you; even thought I wish it would.

This book is filled with everything from the bouncing ball to tips to avoid twinning, from the general notion of volume conservation to animal gaits. It can be intimidating, but a couple reads of Williams is like being in he presence of years of experience. At first the presentation is systemic and historical, but after a while it starts to become more disorganized. This is just the nature of things, eventually one starts specializing. Due to its depth, Williams may not be the best book for a beginner (if one can get past its 40’s drawing style, Preston Blair’s textbook is still tops, though Blair is theory light compared to Williams), because it may be discouraging to see such depth right off the bat. I can’t recommend this highly enough to anyone interested in animation.

This is a fantastic book for character animation in general. Anyone who is a professional animator or aspiring to become one should have this in their library. As far as lessons are concerned, it doesn’t get any more complete than this. The book focuses on teaching the fundemantals of character animation regardless of what medium it’s being done in (hand drawn, 3D, stop-motion, flash, etc.).I also have disney’s “The Illusion of life” book, but I open up “The Animator’s Survival Kit” more often nowadays whenever I need I quick refresher or learn some new tricks that I haven’t yet utilized in my work.

didn’t see any photos of a spiraled one so i was uncertain to buy it but i think it was worth it! makes it easier to fold it since it’s such a thick big book, quality is great though 🙂 little bit of page dust on the plastic coil that you have to dust off but perfect!

[The good]I give this book five stars, as I’m already acquainted with it from my local library and know that the information is valuable.  Now that I’ve become serious about animating, I needed a copy for myself.  I think most will enjoy this book and find it as valuable as I do – I highly recommend it.RIP Richard Williams 1933-2019[The Bad]I don’t understand why my book was shipped with a heavy-ish object (ESOW Kitchen Water Filter Faucet) even when I chose not to consolidate my orders to save on packaging.  I think all books need to be shipped individually in literature mailers.  It drives me crazy when a book arrives damaged.

Fantastic book, I love seeing behind the scenes into the world of animation. The stories Richard Williams has to tell are all interesting, and the advice he has is solid. I was surprised by some of the one star reviews, which stated that the book was full of smut, (it’s not, but if you expected the guy who’s most famous for being in charge of things like Jessica Rabbit to not draw women, I don’t know what to tell you) or that Williams keeps advocating art college, (he doesn’t, he just tells what you will need to learn) and that this book is only useful for hand animation. (which as you might’ve guessed, it’s not. It tells you the principles of animation which are used no matter what medium you animate in) This book is a wonderful addition to any animation fans bookshelf, and is a treasure to any real animator.

This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone with even a passing interest in creating animation. I devoured it in a few days, and am now back on my secound and third readings. Step by step instructions, LOADED with examples and illustrations, stuffed with tips and tricks from the last 100 years of experts in the field. I am a 3-D animator, and though the book was written by a semi – “old school” animator, it has already vastly improved my work and changed (read, corrected) my entire approach to animation. This book does not concentrate on mediums and media (software, paper, film etc) It FULLY Covers the actual ART of Animation: Timing, expression, Formulas, planning, etc etc. Best book purchase I have made in years. It doesn’t waste time disscussing character development and drawing methods, It cuts straight to the chase – Animation; Grace movement, speed, reality vs. cartoon effects. The book itself is soft cover, and rather large and heavy – I’m not sure how well the binding will hold up as it IS a workbook and has already seen much dog earring, and margin notes and markers by me. It lays flat on a desk so it lends itself to “real time” instruction. If you animate (in any medium) You GOT to have it!

There are books, and then there is THIS. Simply put, this is the best book I’ve ever read till date. Its better than most novels, educationals or biographies.its real really good. Cant explain. but it breaks down everything in detail. By the middle of the book, things begin to click, and you get to understand why/how things work inbetween keys.To make it even sweeter,I ordered from Amazon US and still thrilled I received my package over here in Nigeria. It took just 5 days. Talk about speedy service!Thumbs up Amazon. I’m sure to order the remaining books on my wish list.

Richard Williams is a truly amazing animator (look up behind the scenes on who framed Rogger rabbit and the thief and the cobbler) , he’s had decades of experience and learned from many of the all time greats. He condensed that knolage and put it into this book , it’s entertaining, easy to read , and most importantly teaches you what need to know about being an animator. I’m a 3d animator and I understood the machanics of that medium but I really didn’t know the fundamentals of animation until I read this book . This book teaches animation from the prospective of 2d but the information is transferable to 3d or stop motion as long as you get the basics of those mediums , like with 3d as long you know how to set key frames and pose amateurs etc. This book also works if you’ve never animated anything before .

I recently just graduated with a BFA in animation with very little understanding of animation itself. I decided to order this book to see if it could be of any help and I’m extremely happy that I did. Very concise, straight to the point, and not overbearing.I highly recommend this book for any student of animation or anyone who just wants to explore animation as an interest or hobby. Very pleased. I’m 60 pages in without realizing it and it is so far a really solid and thorough read. Indepth history of the development of animation, quotes from staple-greats, beautifully crafted lessons, the author has an enjoyable voice, and you don’t feel as if you’re reading a textbook, yet you are definitely learning valuable lessons, and it’s full of wonderful insights into the industry, the way to setup animations, and an unbeatable amount of referencesto animations, artists, books, that are all worth the lookup. I’ve never been happier.

It’s a great reference book, breaks down animation techniques nicely. I passed it on to a nephew into animation and anime, he’s out and out fascinated by it.

i kept this short the 3D part of this book is not where shine. But instead the frame by frame animations, steps where add the extra movement to give that transition as smooth as real/flow as possible.

Taught me so much about my animation workflow. Has walked me through 2D basics so well that i felt confident to try Blender, Mya, and Sketchbook. I need a new computer, but pencil and paper have to make a comeback. This book showed me all of it is possible.

I’m no kind of animator, and not a ‘great’ artist or anything (need far more practice ^_^). But even just skimming this book, it’s amazing! It goes into depth that feels like someone is tutoring you on each little topic, and you’re like “Yeah, that makes a LOT of sense!” It SHOWS everything that it’s saying. I have enjoyed it immensely so far and once I ever actually try to animate anything I’m sure it will come in even more handy.

I was looking into traditional animation so I picked up this book at the recommendation of both amazon and my professor. I was surprised to find that a lot of the exercises and advice is great for digital animation as well! The author does a great job of taking a somewhat dry topic and making it interesting, it’s hard to put the darn book down! And even when you do, you just wanna go an animate, even if you don’t have time! Wonderful book that I would recommend to anyone.

The first surprise paper in this book is excellent quality! especially for the price. I have been looking for a book like this for years and this is the best one I have found. I was particularly interested in the walk/run and movement sequence of animals / people / expressions / and movements. I’ve only had the book 10 minutes and I am thrilled with my purchase.
