Diversity and Inclusion is so vital to a business’s ability to succeed. To truly embrace D&I, everyone must ‘take your shoes off first’. When you take off your ‘shoes’, you’re leaving behind your biases, former beliefs, and past experiences. This will allow you to truly listen and be open to all thoughts, perspectives, and ideas from your team. Leaving your shoes on vs taking them off is the difference between hearing and listening. Must read for all business owners and leaders!

The story of a business professional who navigates through a change in his business and how if he looks at the change through fear he can’t embrace the change, but when he starts to be curious about changes, he can see opportunities and synergies.

This is a fast easy read, but it contains a profound truth about opening yourself up to a change in perspective, which is necessary before you can make lasting and important changes in your life. Applicable to business or personal life, it uses a relatable parable to illustrate how removing blinders and challenging our assumptions can help open us up to new possibilities.

This easy to read book should be mandatory reading from high school on and come with a sticker that says “read again every 5 years”.Wherever you are in life this quick read can actually help you avoid unnecessary issues with people. By realizing that they are not necessarily the main reason for the issues; it could be yourself. Preconceived ideas we may build up in life or in certain situations are very powerful and are often very hard to reconsider. But life can be so much easier, happier, and even more healthy when we start embracing the uncomfortable when trying to understand someone else’s perspective.“Take your shoes off first” illustrates through an individual’s journey that taking these steps is not complicated, but also not easy. It requires courage from you. The eight practical steps to take as you embark on this journey of personal growth, listed and explained at the end of the book, will definitively put you on your path to success. And that’s also what I wish for my family.

“Take Your Shoes Off First” is not your typical business book. The author presents a simple but engaging story reminiscent of an “Eight Fold Path” journey of enlightenment.Steve, a company founder systematically sets aside preconceived assumptions with the help of friends and acquaintances within his community. The fictional story is very relatable to anyone who has confronted a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, then with a little bit of perspective broke through the uncertainty and owned the stumbling blocks that were in the way. What differentiates this book from many “how to succeed in business” books, is the study guide at the end of the book, presenting a great framework for not only individual but corporate teams and any organization for discussion.

This is a beautiful story. It reads like a longer parable teaching such a simple lesson, but one that most of us never follow – just slow down and take your shoes off first. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been meditating for 25 years, have done deep soul work, or are at a place where you’re just starting the journey of self-discovery and healing, this wonderful little book has something to offer. As humans we so often look at things in complex fashion, if it’s not “difficult” or “complicated” we discount it, though in life it’s often the simplest of teachings that can have the greatest impact. This book can have that impact. It has a message that in its essence “should” be so simple to do that we should all be doing it all the time. But in reality, we all need to be doing more of. Thanks for this Julia, you’ve given a gift everyone can get blessings from.

I’m grateful that the talented Julia Freeland took the time to capture significant insights in Take Your Shoes Off First! Rarely can you get powerful philosophical concepts delivered in a simple, page-turning story. The lessons shared in this quick yet deep read renew our understanding of how to show up at work, at home, with ourselves and in our relationships. I will definitely turn to the 8 lessons over and over again, and might even display them on post it notes so I’m mindful of what’s truly meaningful and what’s really important in order to live a more successful and fulfilling life.

Amazing book with an extremely important message. I am sure that we have all been in the same situation that Steve is in. With this powerful short story Julia managed to point out a major problem – judging without knowing the whole story. It doesn’t matter if it is work related or if it is in your personal life.We all should take our shoes off first and think about the situation and try to see it from a different perspective.Very well written!!

Heard about this book via a friend, and glad I took the time to find out what it was about. I read this book cover-to-cover in less than 2 hours – couldn’t put it down. It was an easier read than most business books I had poured through before, packed with an engaging story and transformative quotes. Enjoyed the “Pocket Guide” at the end of the book, taking the learning even farther.

This book was a quick and easy read, and it is amazing what I have gotten out of it. I found myself relating to the experiences in the story and making notes of how I could be a better collaborator and more effective manager at work as well as a more open-minded partner at home. The reflection questions at the end of the book are excellent for individual reflection as well as group discussions. The book does a great job of setting the stage for deep and insightful reflections and conversations.

This book will change the way you think about everything in your life. Its written as a highly relatable story, and interweaves thought provoking messages throughout, encouraging both the main character and the reader to evolve in their viewpoint. It’s a short but impactful book that can be read in one sitting. But the key concepts and message will resonate in your thoughts for weeks to come. Take the time for yourself, and read this book!

A thought-provoking, quick and entertaining story that helps shed light on the power of hidden beliefs and how they shape what happens in our lives. It’s similar to Radical Candor in that it leaves you with a set of principles that can transform all interactions for the better, but it is a much easier read.

1hr of your time to help evaluate personal and professional relationships where you may be stuck, frustrated, or just simply need a reminder to set your opinions aside and see things from other angles. Definitely a book to come back to several times and it will spark different experiences or struggles. We could all use Julia as our Life Coach.

As many times as Ive heard someone say to “walk a mile in my shoes”, I never considered the fact that I would first needed to take my own shoes off. Understanding this is critical and is really highlighted in this book. The story in this book truly breaks it down in a way that anyone could completely understand. I highly recommend reading this book. It will open your eyes to a new way of thinking.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “walk a mile in my shoes,” as a way to empathize with what someone else’s experience is like. But just putting on their shoes, and going into the experience with your own “shoes” still on (e.g., your perspectives, biases, stories your telling yourself), you’re likely to learn how you would deal with the situation, not truly experience what they experience.Julia Freeland tells a simple and poignant story of someone who learns of their contribution to a negative situation by not only putting on someone else’s shoes, but by also inspecting the “shoes” they took off, and what is possible to see and feel once they are no longer wearing their shoes. It’s not enough to “walk a mile someone else’s shoes” to see the other side of an issue or opportunity, you have to take off your shoes first to gain different insights and experiences.”Take Your Shoes Off First” is a valuable lesson and skill for being more empathetic and inclusive, and discovering the other side of impact you are having in a situation.
