Really wonderful resource. Whether you are curious, entering into the conversation, or a seasoned DEIJ practitioner this book has valuable resources. Not only do they define terms clearly and helpfully they provide real world, practical solutions. Especially as someone who lives in a state where racist political rhetoric and policy is rampant this is such a good book on how to combat those things in the way we think, talk, and behave. As a DEIJ practitioner and scholar, I found that it also offers a lot to think about and practical guidance for this difficult and important work.

The title and cover of this book is just as stunning as the content inside. Having a cover with a multitude of diverse people on the front, is the perfect indicator for readers of all backgrounds to expect to gain knowledge when they pick this up! When reading this, I felt seen and could not pick just one chapter to call my favorite. I thoroughly enjoyed chapter 9: “Employees Can’t Be Safe Until They Feel Safe,” and chapter 12: The Problem with “Professionalism.” I think if you are looking to learn more about racial justice, regardless if you struggle with it or witness colleagues having troubles, this is for you!

We can’t create change unless we open ourselves up to discussion, personal reflection and willingness to take action. You will be equipped to take the necessary steps on your own DEIJ journey as you read the direct and straightforward knowledge in this book.As a person of color, I read and reread portions of the book to dig deeper within my own learning journey. I realized my own blind spots and the need to expand my own knowledge from a DEI lens to a DEIJ lens. The straightforward writing and thought provoking discussion questions opened up my eyes to rethink my fundamental foundation and focus on what I will do as I create change.If you are ready to step into change and ready for the challenges uncomfortable conversations will bring, this is the book for you to read. Recently, I was faced with challenges from colleagues as I led an effort to create a land acknowledgment statement. Reading the book, followed my journey with similar challenges highlighted in the book. I used the content, discussion and reflection questions to prepare my strategy, steps and prep for the difficult and necessary uncomfortable conversations. The creation of this statement brought out all levels of DEIJ understanding for the group to continue on their own learning journey. Proving the book is a must read to learn together! We cannot do this on our own!
