As I delved into the pages of this book, I felt a deep sense of connection with the author’s experiences and insights. “Nine Secrets of Resilient Leaders: Coaching High-Performing Teams” is the ultimate guide for anyone in a leadership role or aspiring to be one. It magically transforms outdated leadership models into resilient, empathetic, and adaptable approaches, making it a must-read for all leaders, regardless of the team’s size. The book provides practical real-world applications and is an invaluable resource for leadership growth, offering a fresh perspective on effective leadership in an ever-changing world. However, some readers may raise concerns about the author’s research methods, as they discovered that the book’s foundation relied on a relatively small and non-diverse sample.

I have to say that this book raises more concerns than trust with me. The book opens with this statement “I poured [sic] through hundreds of scholarly articles. I conducted interviews and focus groups with leaders at all levels from supervisors to managers, directors and senior executives. After publishing the research, I felt called to share this wildly important information.” This drew me in to hear more of her ideas, but the more I read, the more it felt like I was reading another generic “how to succeed” book, except that this one was being vague for some reason. It was loaded with ambiguous statements that felt like they were trying to hide more information than it was trying to reveal. In checking the references after reading this book, it became clear why this was. I was surprised to find this author’s research, which I’m assuming is the research she referred to at the beginning of the book, consisted of only 22 people (all women). These numbers seem quite low and non-diverse considering her statement of “I conducted interviews and focus groups with leaders at all levels from supervisors to managers, directors and senior executives.”This feeling of vagueness carries throughout the book for me. There are many statements in the book that made me question whether the author was being honest in her work. I like to she is, but it felt like she was going out of her way so much to aggrandize her research that she was also trying to hide that it wasn’t as complete of research as she made it out to seem. This did not settle with me and tainted a lot of the message. An example of this kind of feel appeared right out of the gates in her book when she invited readers to “share your 4- or 5-star [sic] review on Amazon.” There was just an overall feeling that I did not trust because of this approach to sell what sounded good, but to brush a lot of reality under the rug. That said, I think in a future edition, she could simplify it, make it cleaner, not cover everything, and speak about her year-long research a little more openly. That would feel more genuine. For something that’s been as deeply researched, this felt secretive with a touch of “please don’t shine a light in this corner where it’s vague.”That said, there may be an audience who would find these secrets actually secrets. I found them to be nothing new. Mix nothing new with what I’ve already mentioned, I couldn’t feel good about recommending this book until the author executed a more honest voice (odd, considering how she made a point of discussing that she felt the way to share this was not through scholarly approach. That might have been her mistake).

It’s incredibly challenging to develop resilient teams — I know because I struggled to do so. This book does a good job explaining the principles of leadership in creating these teams. These are incredibly important points, and applying them will hopefully allow you to avoid the mistakes that I made, where I thought I had to be resilient for my team and failed to build them up for my business. Now where this book falls short is in outlining actionable points for leaders that are wading through their day-to-day chaos. The theory and principles are very solid, but are a bit abstract. It’s easy to say that people must practice mindfulness, communicate better, cultivate creativity, etc. But what most of us need is a step-by-step blueprint for how to do that in a real-world application, plus some troubleshooting. Because, as I’ve found, it’s all easier said than done. Between dealing with time management, problematic personalities, staff issues, etc., it’s actually quite difficult to figure out where to start and how to actually make lasting change happen in your teams. Now, it’s still a pretty good book with solid ideas. If you’re new to leadership or building your team, pick it up nevertheless and it will give you the right foundation and approach to being a better team leader.

As a newly appointed leader in my field, this book is timely in giving me real world insight into what effective leadership should look like. What “traditional” (read: old school) leaders need to realize, is that true control/compliance does not come from fear, but empathy. Only read a few chapters and had to stop to share and review.

Everything is changing in business so fast, becoming more adaptable and taking advantage of change is a critical skill. I really liked the way the book was written. Everything was based on academic research which included interviews with business leaders and successful teams. Much more credible than similar leadership books out there, I was very impressed with the research, and Sandra Abbey does a great job pulling everything together into a great resource for leaders and managers.

I always thought that true leaders were born that way, with a special leadership DNA. This book has made it clear to me that is not true, but that anyone can learn to rise to any level of leadership. I learned how one can build confidence and better communication skills, which can be empowering, but one of my major takeaways was how to create a step-by-step blueprint for dealing with day-to-day issues to the point of being able to thrive in the midst of them. A keyword used throughout the book was resilience and the importance of that trait to keep pushing forward no matter what the circumstances. As a leader we must continue to learn how to build up and support our teams under us. Personally, I don’t have team at the moment but learned some valuable concepts that I will use if ever put in a position of leading a project. There are a lot of great tools here that can be used in many life situations. Well done.

This inspirational book gives meaningful examples of public figures whose hardships made them into the leaders they became. The author argues that resilience is a hard acquired trait with tremendous impact and benefit to those around the leader and to the companies where these leaders work. The author provides profound inspiration and practical advice on how one can be a pioneer at heart and a bold risk taker.

It offers great reminders on how we can overcome those obstacles and grow stronger in our careers and personal lives. I’ve been leading teams fro more than 20+ years. I feel it’s more challenging now than it was back then. In my early years of becoming a leader I never understood the concept difference between being a boss verses being a leader. Being a leader is way more effective than just being a boss. Leaders and mentors gain the respect of their teams and employees want to do great for their learder, bosses expect this behavor but usually haven’t earned it. Leaders grow people into better people and employees, bosses tell people what to do and make sure people are working at all times. There is a very big differece. This book is good for overall concepts but needs to do better at teaching how to apply it to the real world and to the many different personalities that a leader is challenged to work with on a daily basis. Personalitily leadership is very much different than just trying to get people to all row the boat in the same direction. Overall this is a good starter book.

Very good read. Very simplified and easy to understand terms. Very helpful for both teamwork and personal applications. Like it was mentioned before, a workbook to go along with it would be helpful to expand more thoughts and ability to get others involved.Mina JohnsonLoved the experience of reading this book.

I enjoyed reading this book and found it easy to read and to follow. As a leader, Each chapter made me think about the leaders and teams I have worked with as well as my own leadership skills and styles. These concepts are those which I think many leaders know about and perhaps even strive for, and contains new concepts that have not been considered by me before. This book helps to organize important concepts and can help leaders to dive deeper and hopefully refine and put good practices into use and make them into habits. I found some of the principles to be new and fresh which helped me to develop a new way of thinking and I am working on practicing these concepts to build a better team. I would love to see a ‘workbook’ to go along with this book to brainstorm and track progress.Much of what this book talks about can be applied to every aspect of one’s life – even non-leaders. This book is a helpful companion for me as I navigate working with so many different people and personalities as well as helps me to reflect on myself and how I respond to others. I think this book would make a great gift for ‘bosses week’ or Christmas.

I am a leader in the company I work for and I am always looking for ways to be a better leader and get better results for my clients. Being a leader is not easy and I try to read every book I can find that will be helpful and this was one of the few that actually are. I have actually started to implement some of the suggestions in the book and it seems to have a positive effect. The author did a great job and if I owned a company I would make sure all my leaders read this book.
