GenTIC is pleased to announce the joint award ceremony of the Cecilia Castaño 2023 Award for research on gender inequalities in science and technology (STEM), the Final Project with a Gender Perspective Awards of UOC’s Equality Unit, and the Equit@T Awards of UOC’s Faculty of Computer Science, Multimedia and Telecommunications.

The Cecilia Castaño Awards, the Final Project with a Gender Perspective Awards, and the Equit@T Awards have been promoted at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya to promote equal opportunities and eliminate gender inequalities in science and technology. The objective is to reduce the gender gap in the choice of STEM studies (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), make women’s contributions to the different fields of knowledge visible, and integrate a gender perspective into research and teaching. These three calls for applications are part of the UOC’s broad strategy to raise awareness of gender inequalities and the importance of incorporating a gender approach and are linked to actions established in the research and teaching areas of the UOC’s Equality Plan.
In this joint ceremony, the awards will be presented to the works that have emerged as winners in the latest edition of the three calls. By organizing the event on February 16, the month in which the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated, the UOC joins activities taking place worldwide to acknowledge the crucial role women play in the scientific and technological community, as well as promoting the access of women and girls to education, training, and research in STEM areas and highlighting the inequalities that exist in these fields.
To open the event, Professor Marta Aymerich, director of the UOC’s eHealth Center, will give the communication “Clinical case: tools to combat inequality of women in science”. Next, Cecilia Castaño, Honorary Professor of Applied Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid, will give a communication on the remaining gender gaps in science and technology. Cristina Sánchez Miret, Professor of Sociology at the University of Girona, will chair the event.
