The Watts Filters – cross-cultural conflict communication Janet Fraser-Smith

The Watts Filters is a hands-on tool to improve understanding and explain conflicts in cross-cultural relationships, whether it is within a marriage, business relations or personal.

The WATTS FILTERS aims to demonstrate the reality behind the “obvious blindness” in the “I just don’t see” often heard in conversations. We are not all on the same wavelength and the tool endeavours to explain why.

By using three designs of various shapes, Janet illustrates in the video, how the WATTS FILTERS can be used to show that changing the number of transparent layers of colour can affect what we see. Janet engages the observer in answering questions about what they are able to see at particular points in order to encourage them in conflict situations to ask themselves the question ‘Why is this important to me?’.

It is quite staggering that just a few layers of transparent coloured sheets really make that much difference. It is similarly staggering that an intricate web of deep cultural values and beliefs can be revealed. This is the first step in developing cultural intelligence.

As a non-emotional hands-on conversational tool the WATTS FILTERS is designed to help people to work together to see the bigger picture which encourages communication. The WATTS FILTERS can be applied to any situation, simple or complex, and can be used within conflict management, mediation, counselling, cross-cultural relationships, and many more conversations that promote peace and well-being in our lives.
