This book is an excellent follow up to Hendel and Goulston’s previous book “Why Cope When You Can Heal.” It’s a fairly quick read filled with new insights and practical strategies. Every leader (including the leadership role of parenting) needs to understand what they say about the difference between stress and trauma, and that trauma does not always happen in a single traumatic instant but smaller stresses can have cumulative traumatic impact. Their advice on how to prepare an organization to handle trauma in advance, and how to handle it during and afterwards, is especially helpful. Today, between the pandemic, the recession, social disruption and injustice, and generalized anxiety about the future, almost everyone is likely to experience trauma at some level and in some form. If that happens to you, your family, or your organization, you will be glad that you have read this book.
