I had the original version of this when I was in college. It was a required text, and I soon understood why. So when I got the chance to get my hands on a copy of the expanded version I saved my pennies! I was not disappointed. I wish there was a more expanded portion in regards to character design basics, but with how much is in this book that is a Minor complaint. This touches on topic that I struggled with in college (timing and smoother, more believable tweens).OH! the pages are already showing signs of wear because of how much I reference it on any given animation-based project! So far the binding has held up, which is very important to me.

This is by far the most complete ANIMATION book. Many new books have used concepts of this book to explain the fundamentals of animation, so why get those books when you can get the original source?It covers ALL, the examples are clean and clear, surely the best book I’ve bought for animation.BTW, yes, Richard William is mad, he goes through every concept so thoroughly and methodically , getting the best out of each movement. You should really see how does details really boost the quality in the animation. Also, his DVD’s are great too, highly recommended for anyone out there!

My 12 year old grandson is interested in computer games development and animation design so I had asked ICT grads with an interest in this area which book or magazine etc would be a good start or ongoing instruction. The Animator’s Survival Kit was recommended and when it arrived I realised it was very comprehensive and although more suitable for an older person this is something he can work on and keep forever. It is fun, easy to understand and shows how much work and practice is needed to become really good at animation. This is the bible and like the Bible, not everyone will read it from front to back, they may keep coming back to the bits that interest them until they eventually have a good knowledge of the subject. Well presesnted and fun and usefull – unlike the other bible.

I don’t know how useful this would be to a professional but as a complete amateur this book is great. This should be the first book on animation you buy if your looking to see what different animation cycles should look like. Unless you don’t want your kids seeming cartoon women animation cycles this kid is very kid friendly in the way it explains how things work. The book is full of animation cycles and explains in layman terms why things are they way they are. I’m very impressed with this as a hobbist this is just what I wanted.

This book is so incredibly in-depth and thorough, I’ve been carefully reading through each page and have already learned SO much wisdom and techniques. There’s even over a hundred pages just on showing and teaching you how to animate walking! This book is massive and filled with so much wisdom; i feel like it’s an entire college course on animation, and the lessons in it are from real disney experience; it’s so incredibly valuable to me!

I could not put this down.If you are really focused on learning how to move the figure, and analyze movement, this is for you. If you are new at this, take beginning drawing first, and figure drawing first. This is not a quick ‘easy’ book for beginners, but for a more seasoned artist. This is an amazing book!!! I cannot see why anyone would give this book less than a five. For the people out there that have never attempted to do an animation or find it very difficult and though if they bought this book they would be able to instantly do it with minimal effort. I’m sorry to say, the answer is No; animation is a difficult yet extremely underrated skill that most people assume to be easy. This book helps you with some of the steps to make a lot of the common animations you may encounter (Lip syncing was very helpful). It is more of a tool or reference guide to help you out during the animation process; It will not do the work for you; even thought I wish it would.

This book is filled with everything from the bouncing ball to tips to avoid twinning, from the general notion of volume conservation to animal gaits. It can be intimidating, but a couple reads of Williams is like being in he presence of years of experience. At first the presentation is systemic and historical, but after a while it starts to become more disorganized. This is just the nature of things, eventually one starts specializing. Due to its depth, Williams may not be the best book for a beginner (if one can get past its 40’s drawing style, Preston Blair’s textbook is still tops, though Blair is theory light compared to Williams), because it may be discouraging to see such depth right off the bat. I can’t recommend this highly enough to anyone interested in animation.

I bought this at the recommendation of animator Ross O’Donovan from Game Grumps (he recommended this book during the Pokémon Art Academy series). I haven’t started really diving into it, but so far the book is AMAZING.For one thing, the Animator’s Survival Kit is no casual reference – it’s a brick of a book overflowing with learning material. There are chapters upon chapters of really rich references and diagrams.I hope to learn a whole lot from following this book. I will update this review when I’ve explored it in more detail. But so far, everything about this book seems top knotch.

This is a fantastic book for character animation in general. Anyone who is a professional animator or aspiring to become one should have this in their library. As far as lessons are concerned, it doesn’t get any more complete than this. The book focuses on teaching the fundemantals of character animation regardless of what medium it’s being done in (hand drawn, 3D, stop-motion, flash, etc.).I also have disney’s “The Illusion of life” book, but I open up “The Animator’s Survival Kit” more often nowadays whenever I need I quick refresher or learn some new tricks that I haven’t yet utilized in my work.

Fantastic book, I love seeing behind the scenes into the world of animation. The stories Richard Williams has to tell are all interesting, and the advice he has is solid. I was surprised by some of the one star reviews, which stated that the book was full of smut, (it’s not, but if you expected the guy who’s most famous for being in charge of things like Jessica Rabbit to not draw women, I don’t know what to tell you) or that Williams keeps advocating art college, (he doesn’t, he just tells what you will need to learn) and that this book is only useful for hand animation. (which as you might’ve guessed, it’s not. It tells you the principles of animation which are used no matter what medium you animate in) This book is a wonderful addition to any animation fans bookshelf, and is a treasure to any real animator.

This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone with even a passing interest in creating animation. I devoured it in a few days, and am now back on my secound and third readings. Step by step instructions, LOADED with examples and illustrations, stuffed with tips and tricks from the last 100 years of experts in the field. I am a 3-D animator, and though the book was written by a semi – “old school” animator, it has already vastly improved my work and changed (read, corrected) my entire approach to animation. This book does not concentrate on mediums and media (software, paper, film etc) It FULLY Covers the actual ART of Animation: Timing, expression, Formulas, planning, etc etc. Best book purchase I have made in years. It doesn’t waste time disscussing character development and drawing methods, It cuts straight to the chase – Animation; Grace movement, speed, reality vs. cartoon effects. The book itself is soft cover, and rather large and heavy – I’m not sure how well the binding will hold up as it IS a workbook and has already seen much dog earring, and margin notes and markers by me. It lays flat on a desk so it lends itself to “real time” instruction. If you animate (in any medium) You GOT to have it!

Richard Williams is a truly amazing animator (look up behind the scenes on who framed Rogger rabbit and the thief and the cobbler) , he’s had decades of experience and learned from many of the all time greats. He condensed that knolage and put it into this book , it’s entertaining, easy to read , and most importantly teaches you what need to know about being an animator. I’m a 3d animator and I understood the machanics of that medium but I really didn’t know the fundamentals of animation until I read this book . This book teaches animation from the prospective of 2d but the information is transferable to 3d or stop motion as long as you get the basics of those mediums , like with 3d as long you know how to set key frames and pose amateurs etc. This book also works if you’ve never animated anything before .

I’m no kind of animator, and not a ‘great’ artist or anything (need far more practice ^_^). But even just skimming this book, it’s amazing! It goes into depth that feels like someone is tutoring you on each little topic, and you’re like “Yeah, that makes a LOT of sense!” It SHOWS everything that it’s saying. I have enjoyed it immensely so far and once I ever actually try to animate anything I’m sure it will come in even more handy.

I was looking into traditional animation so I picked up this book at the recommendation of both amazon and my professor. I was surprised to find that a lot of the exercises and advice is great for digital animation as well! The author does a great job of taking a somewhat dry topic and making it interesting, it’s hard to put the darn book down! And even when you do, you just wanna go an animate, even if you don’t have time! Wonderful book that I would recommend to anyone.

The first surprise paper in this book is excellent quality! especially for the price. I have been looking for a book like this for years and this is the best one I have found. I was particularly interested in the walk/run and movement sequence of animals / people / expressions / and movements. I’ve only had the book 10 minutes and I am thrilled with my purchase.
