Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations
Following the success of his #1 New York Instances bestseller Make Your Mattress, which has bought over a million copies, Admiral William H. McRaven is again with superb tales of bravery and heroism throughout his profession as a Navy SEAL and commander of America’s Particular Operations Forces.

Admiral William H. McRaven is part of American army historical past, having been concerned in among the most well-known missions in latest reminiscence, together with the seize of Saddam Hussein, the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, and the raid to kill Osama bin Laden.

Sea Tales begins in 1963 at a French Officers’ Membership in France, the place Allied officers and their wives gathered to have drinks and inform tales about their adventures throughout World Warfare II-the place the place a younger Invoice McRaven discovered the worth of a great story. Sea Tales is an unforgettable look again on one man’s unimaginable life, from childhood days sneaking into high-security army websites to a day job of looking terrorists and rescuing hostages.

Motion-packed, humorous, and filled with helpful life classes like these exemplified in McRaven’s bestselling Make Your Mattress, Sea Tales is a exceptional memoir from considered one of America’s most completed leaders.

Admiral McRaven is probably best known for organizing the SEAL Team raid that killed Osama bin Laden. In this book McRaven gives readers a kind of memoir of a number of “Sea Stories,” interesting episodes from his military career. Each “story” offers lessons in leadership and other positive qualities. I enjoyed this book, and recommend it.

Best book I have read in a long time. Admiral McRaven gives civilians a glimpse of what service is all about. His stories are clear, concise and greatly entertaining. The back stories of the missions capturing Saddam Hussein and the killing of bin Laden are worth the price of this book. However, I picked this book up because I ran across McRavens UT commencement address on YouTube. He’s a great speaker, storeyteller, and American hero.

While I prefer peace and diplomacy over war, I realize that military force is needed to protect our country’s interests and values. Given that, I’m thankful for all the men and women willing to put themselves in harm’s way for our sake.Admiral McRaven spent over 35 years as a spec ops warrior & leader within the Seal community & joint ops that have been a fundamental part of our military efforts since 9/11. Many know the bin Laden raid details, in this book we learn his role in planning & executing this successful mission along with many others. In this book, he shows his gift as a story teller not only taking us inside that mission story but many more. Thanks Admiral McRaven for your service & for telling your sea stories. My only suggestion to the publisher is to flip chapters 16 & 17. Not only would “Neptune’s Spear” fit chronologically as chapter 16 with those that come before it, the current chapter 16 to me is one of the best in the book & together with the short final chapter sums up some of his best insights.

Short stories covering Admiral McRaven’s career. Each one historic, and memorable for the world as well as those who served with him. Each story gives a unique perspective of a man that walked the walk, and talked the talk. The news gets so much wrong and inaccurate, and this is the story of someone that was actually there.

Not only fascinating accounts of the lengths to which human beings will go, the suffering they will endure, to fulfill their vision of patriotism. We owe them enormously. The book starts slow through his early years but midway you can’t put it down (or the equivalent–I listened to him read the audio version). Everyone who know these things about those who sacrifice their family and personal lives to save us from terrorism and other threats. For Trump fans, you’ll be happy to know he doesn’t say anything about him, although he has been an outspoken critic since retirement.

Being a Merchant Mariner, I read a lot of books. This one is the best in recent memory. Expertly written and edited, it grabs and holds the reader in a vice like grip of excitement and emotional intensity. I have already, and will continue to recommend it to my coworkers and friends, as a book that cannot possibly disappoint anyone. Thanks to the author for so vividly sharing your exploits!

As a former sailor, I am addicted to sea stories. My favorite were told to my shipmates and I by a Gunner’s Mate I nicknamed Seattle McFall due to one of his sea stories. Of course, my life was changed a great deal by that man. In fact, I am only alive due to an action he took on February 24, 1972 while my ship was enroute to Cuba, but that story will have to wait for another time.I served in the Navy from 1970 to 1980. In 1972 my gunboat went on special ops in and around Cuba. Of course, as a cook aboard the gunboat, I was not privy to much of what we were doing, except that it was prompted by actions taken under the leadership of Fidel Castro in an illegal action against reputed freedom fighters seeking to overthrow Castro’s regime. At times, we worked with members of the Navy Seals. The only thing I recall in my conversations with one of the Seals is that he didn’t appear any different from you or me. I state this with all respect. He just seemed to be like anybody else, except, there was no evidence of his being out of shape. Mind you, I am certain he was skilled in fighting and so forth. But, he never acted or appeared as such. To his credit. My point is, when I found William H. McRaven’s book, “Sea Stories,” available on Amazon Kindle, I snapped it up, as well as the Audible edition. If I had been the editor or publisher, I might have advised McRaven to devote a few less pages to his touching tribute to his father and to his youth. Then again, though, these pages were interesting and inspirational, so I don’t want to come across as critical. Besides, his tribute to a coach resonates with me, almost as well as it did to McRaven.Aside from that, the book is an excellent reminder of the courage and determination, and even, often, of the cost these great folks pay to help keep our country safe and secure. Read on to learn more, if you wish, or simply buy the book and treat yourself to great inspirational tales that even, occasional, evince some humor.Sometimes that humor helps, because it follows events that came when some special operations didn’t quite go as planned.BLUSH FACTOR: If rough language offends you, be forewarned. However, in this book, I WOULD recommend reading it to everybody you know. Bleep out the eff-words if you wish, but even children, in my humble opinion, should have an honest understanding of warfare and the war against terrorism. I know that I, myself, would have appreciated a more honest understanding before I enlisted. I was more like that guy born on the fourth of July – Ron Kovic.WRITING & EDITING: This is much more than a memoir, even if it is very much just that. It touches all of the emotions. The editing is first-rate.BOTTOM LINE:I initially wanted to rate it four stars but, in considering all of my emotions while reading, and listening to Mcraven narrate his own words, I can only rate this five stars out of five. I thak him for his service and for his reminder of what it means to be a member of the greatest generation – which is not reserved merely for WWII vets. It includes anybody going through the sacrifice and courage that he bears witness to.

What this memoir adds to the genre that many other SEAL and SF books don’t is the high level, often untold story of how major operations and conflicts are planned and led. The coordination of military and political leaders, the complex and fluid nature of special forces missions and how they influence those on the battlefield. McRaven’s service is a credit to himself, his family, his country and all those who had the privilege to serve alongside him. Thank you Sir.

Well written, and as the Widow of a Vietnam Vet, so very, very Thankful for all who serve. We are a family of Military: Active, retired, and deceased. Thank you, Sir for writing this book, and sharing your story. May God Bless you & your family.

What a remarkable life and sacrifice. Admiral McRaven gives a personal look in to his life and the tough decisions he made. He shared personal stories and did so without ego. He shared the human side of himself. He shared funny stories. Great leader. Enjoyed the book immensely.

What a great read. I couldn’t put it down. Most of us have heard and/or read about SEAL operations in the news or other books. Events that for many years were kept secret from the public; as they should be to protect our warriors. I am not sure how Admiral Bill McRaven got this book past the DOD sensors. It is filled with his adventures from early SEAL training thru those late in his distinguished career when eliminating Osama bin Laden. Buy the book. If you need motivation, go to YouTube and watch his “MAKE YOUR BED” motivational college commencement speech.

While reading this book I was overwelmed by the bravery, hard work and sacrifices our military folks make. The training, technology, planning and work that goes on (that as civilians we are clearly unaware) is amazing. The men and women of the military deserve our support, thanks and respect! Thank you Retired Admiral McRaven for giving us a glimpse into the lives of these very brave soldiers!

A very good book. I always enjoy SEAL books. I like action in the chapters. I don’t care to learn about BUDS over and over again. There are many books out there on BUDS and shooting. As I mentioned before I love stories of missions and stories about the “guys” and situations they find themselves in. This book has stories and action. Thank you for your service Admiral.

If you’re looking for the story of a man of honor and great accomplishment, you’ve found it. Admiral McRaven was at the center of a lot of things that were important, performed by extremely accomplished and brave men. And he tells great Sea Stories. In the end, it’s about a great man who served his country well and wrote about it well.

When Amazon offered a bargain on the Kindle version of this book, I asked a friend who’s a retired Navy Captain whether he thought I would like it. He replied that, considering the author, yes, I would probably like it a LOT. This book is the inspiring story of a genuine American patriot. I would read any book Admiral McRaven would write. The attached photo is of his medals, and I’d bet he has plenty more great stories to tell.

Points out opportunities in everyday living to say just the right thing to change thier lives. An amazing book. Never having been in the military, I was repeatedly floored by the level of strategic planning, with practice drills, that support our military operations. The stories are real, riveting…and will get your heart racing. The human side of war was an integral part of each story. Having seen the Tom Hanks movie, the real rescue was an eye opener. The last chapters included the extraction of bin Laden…..you sill find yourself cheering out loud and quietly crying to each story.

For those of us who have served and been in the crucible of Command it is well told story that truly resonates. Admiral McRaven weaves his stories and entwines you into each and every operation. His recounting of his visits with our wounded warriors was most impactful. I was truly moved beyond words. For the average reader it is an exceptionally vivid look inside how U.S. Military Operations are planned and executed with precision, foresight, and just enough flexibility to provide for the unforeseen. As a sidebar, it is also a bit concerning to see the degree of what my be considered meddling behind the planning and operational control of missions. Right down to what gun to bring to the fight, and how many…

This is not so much a memoir as a series of stories about important events and missions in the life of a man who made an incredible contribution to his country. Each chapter is distinct in that each details a specific event or mission. Within each, McRaven reveals his character, beliefs, and dedication to his country and the men who served with him. It is generally upbeat and laudatory of remarkable men and women who have served in our military. It’s apolitical; no one is faulted for mistakes or differences in their philosophy or actions. Several chapters stand out. The account of SEAL training tells us much about the incredible rigor of the training that weeds out 80% of men stronger than you or I can imagine. The chapter that deals with the rescue of Captain Phillips on the high seas from Somali pirates is fascinating; no action like that is accomplished without time, planning, skill, and heroism. The longest chapter details the lengthy and detailed planning in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. McRaven’s writing style matches the adventures he recounts. It is articulate and detailed and holds your attention. Throughout the book he writes of our servicemen and women and the sacrifices they made. Whether you believe in America’s policies and commitment of our people to war, you need to know of the men and women who give so much in service to our country. McRaven talks about these men and women with humility with the recurring theme of the need for teamwork in every mission. Get a good sense of what goes into planning and execution by many of the country’s top military units by a man who directed most of them. Very nicely written

Having read the headlines of the military events that have taken place since 9/11, this book offers a front row seat to how carefully and professionally, critical decisions were made. This is a well crafted story of a man that is every mans hero, that respected and admired his pears and subordinates equally. After reading this, I am even more astounded and proud of the professionalism that exists in our modern military machine. Thank you sir for your service, and honest reflections that you shared with us mortals.

The stories in this book are so riveting you almost forget they’re true events. This book was more than just a memoir, it’s a culmination of military victories from a man who I respect more than anyone. If you like military stories of any kind I highly recommend this book. The only thing I’m disappointed with in this story is now I know who’s responsible for us having to remove our shoes at airport security. It’s ok Admiral, I forgive you.

Fine memoir taking the reader into the life and times of one of our Most distinguished military men. From adolescence through retirement Admiral McRaven takes the reader through his life as a SEAL from the rigors of training, to leading the team that got Bin Laden, to retirement. A great story of significant missions, leadership, sacrifice, dedication to mission and our country, and the people that live their lives in service to our Country. Wonderful.

Thank you! We hear about brave men and women or see TV show and think we understand but we don’t. This book should be read by everyone so we can understand the sacrifices that are made so we can live our lives as Americans. Again thanks for sharing.

He repeatedly emphasizes that it takes the effort of all pulling together to get the job done

William McRaven is a genuine badass. I had the honor to serve under a CO very much like McRaven. It was an experience which continues to benefit me and the people who worked for me. Besides riveting stories right out of the headlines, if you want to learn leadership, read this book.

I joined the Navy in 1977 and all these years later reading a book like this shows how lives are changed through military service. Admiral McRaven faced many challenges and struggles and stayed the course. Leaders like him are few, taking the hard road of a SEAL and keeping that example for those who have followed in his footsteps.

This is a excellent book. The admiral covers so many different aspects of life in the military especially when it comes to being a Navy Seal. There was the perfect balance between war stories and entertaining stories. I have given this book as gift to individuals thinking about going in the military. I would also recommend it as just a good read to better understand what our dedicated military individuals do in the course of their career.

Admiral McRaven is one of our heroes that our military is proud to have had as one of their most profound, intelligent and bravest of men. His book SEA STORIES is proof of his incredible leadership and tenacity. He is responsible for the capture of bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, among many other operations that SEALS undertake on a normal basis. We are so lucky to have had William McRaven as one of our most brilliant and important military leaders. SEA STORIES is testament to how complicated and intense some of those ultimately successful SEALS operations can be that were led by Admiral William McRaven.

This is an excellent book which was written in a casual style. It gives an excellent idea why a person doesn’t want to try out for being a SEAL. McRaven’s stories about childhood were entertaining.

This book is one of the finest motivational/leadership books I have ever read. Not only do you get stories that inspire you, the stories are well told and in some cases will bring you to tears. The Navy Seals really are the best of the best and Admiral McRaven’s stories and life prove that once again. His writing is like Aaron Sorkin meets Julius Caesar. I can not recommend this book more highly.

I FOUND THIS BOOK AN EXCELLENT OVERVIEW OF NAVY SEAL TRAINING/OPERATIONS INCLUDING OTHER MILITARY SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES WORLDWIDE WHILES SERVING FROM ENSIGN TO ADMIRAL. THE SEA STORIES ARE PRESENTED IN A MANNER THAT CAN BE UNDERSTOOD WHILE BEING GRAPHIC ENOUGH TO QUALIFY AS SEA STORIES. MY THANKS TO ADMIRAL (RET) MC RAVEN FOR WRITING HIS BOOK. ANYONE INTERESTED IN A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF THESE TYPES OF MILITARY OPERATIONS SHOULD FIND THIS BOOK INTERESTING.
