Letters to a Young Brother: Manifest Your Destiny
Providing inspirational recommendation in a down-to-earth fashion, this distinctive compilation of letters supplies knowledge, steerage, and heartfelt perception to assist the reader chart their very own path to success. Primarily based on the creator’s motivational talking at inner-city faculties throughout the nation, the letters take care of the powerful points that face younger folks right this moment.

Bombarded with messages from music and the media, Harper got down to dispel the stereotypical picture of success that younger folks obtain right this moment and as a substitute emphasizes various views of what it really means to be a profitable male, similar to instructional and group achievements and self-respect. Supposed to supply this often regarded “misplaced technology” of younger males with phrases of encouragement and steerage, Harper’s deep-rooted ardour concerning the plight of right this moment’s youth drove him to write down this ebook, certain to alter the lives of readers for years to come back.

My teenaged grandson wasn’t at all enthusiastic when I gave him this book. Even after I made him read a few pages, and gave him the option of finishing or not depending on if he liked it, he put it down. But then, a few days later, I noticed he was mentioning things in the book and bringing up subjects covered by Mr. Harper. He admitted he had been reading it and it was ‘pretty good’, which translates to ‘excellent’. I like the fact that you can read a few pages or open it to anywhere and just start reading something of interest. It motivates them to go back and start at the beginning so they don’t miss anything. It might also give parents a jumping off place to start some needed conversations.

I bought this for 16 year old son. On nights that he doesn’t have homework he gets to pick a book to read. He started reading this and he had become more attentive and involved with family moments. He seems to have a stronger sense if self worth and he hears positivity from a fellow black man other than his father. I’m thankful for this book.

This was a book that I had my 16-year-old son read this summer. He seems to enjoy it and he stated he received a lot from it! I read a couple of chapters for myself and what I liked most was, how he used young teens letters to him to help direct them in a positive way that they can understand.

this book has a lot of recommendations for young men while going through life. it is very well thought out and i love the notes from famous actors (will smith) put in the book. it is an easy read and is highly recommended for any young man. especially one without a male figure in his life.

Hill’s book is atypical in that he takes a closer look at who young brothers are – through his own experiences, then asks them to look at themselves. He realizes that young males are faced with many factors that emanate from their environment, and although he and his contributors may not be able to address each one, what this work has done is show young men that someone cared enough to spend “5 minutes” to focus only on them. As a post-grad. psychology student, I am keenly aware of the needs that that act alone attend to. We all know someone who needs to hear words of inspiration, motivation and encouragement. It’s not only for young men. Get the book. Gift the book! (I got the HC and the audio CD – he sounds great, too.)

I bought two books and gifted one each to my young adult boys. Being a Hill Harper fan and raising them as a single parent, I thought this might be a good read for them. In hopes to answer some of their questions or concerns; as well as understanding society from a male’s point of view.

I am so excited that there is a book of hope for young men. I enjoy the positivity and love that is expressed throughout this book for our Young Kings in training. There are about 500 people that I would like to recommend this book to, and I have already made a significant dent in those on my list. Let’s continue to lift up these young people in LOVE and let our lives, not our words be the encouragement to keep them motivated!

I bought this for my teenage nephew. He was homeschooling and I taught his English class. He loves to write and I thought it would be inspirational. It was worth every penny and hour spent on it. It opened the door for my nephew and I to discuss some issues he faced in the past with his own mother who abandoned him. He was raised by his father but it gave him a great understanding about some of the things he needed to do to prepare for life. We are going to order the other book from this author as he also has a great writing style that helped my nephew find his own writing voice. My nephew says it should be required reading for all young men in high school. I agree.

It took them on a spiritual journey… I was told it was like having themselves rescuitated (sp??) & determined to make better decisions! And take control and be accountable for their actiOns. I couldn’t have found this book at most opportuned time! I just hope the individual has the patience & perservernce! I am making this my Reader’ s Choice! Good luck to you all!

Surprisingly good read! My dad bought this book for my brother when he was younger; my brother and I both grew up without our mothers. Recently I’ve been attempting to heal that mother wound, but there is minimal literature on such compared to the father wound. I remembered this book and decided to give it a read. Now, granted, I’m not a young man, but nonetheless, it was quite helpful; I cried a time or two reading. The slang, although a bit outdated in some ways, does add a personable factor, as intended… My 13yo nephew is going through a similar struggle, so I gifted him the book and he loves it, says it is helping him to learn and grow as a young man. Definitely worth the purchase and I recommend gifting it to a young man, or woman, in need of a little guidance!

I purchased for my 13-year old who does not get excited to read. When he read the first letter, he shared how there was parallel in the letter with how he was feeling about reading the book, but like in the letter, he enjoyed it. I don’t get the resistance I used to when I say it’s time to read. Thank you, Harper!

Excellent advice for today’s young men, regardless of ethnicity. The book is well written, and uses the author’s path to success as an excellent example of staying focused in order to avoid the trap of immediate gratification. My teenage sons loved the book, and often refer to passage during dinner table discussions.

Having seen Hill Harper on the Oprah Show, I was anxious to read the book because I have a ministry that sends books to two prisons. I ordered two copies, read one and then sent both to one of the prisons. The librarian said she gave them to two men to read and that they are going to use the books for seminars for young inmates. Harper’s incites are thoughtful and hard hitting. He stresses responsibility, integrity and honor.

I have read this book, and I personally wish I had the book when i was growing up. This is the type of gudie that would lead a young man to a better path. Too many of young men of color are in trouble and labeled as troublemakers. Here is a guide that a father, uncle or mentor could use to help a young man to develop. The 100 Black Men service organization has a affirmation”What they see is what they will be”. This is a great readAfter re-reading the book, I have purchased the paperback and I’m sending it to my nephew. To Manifest his destiny, I believe thsi book will be intrumental in helping him reach his goal of going to college this year. I also believe if any of my other nephews read the book it will help them along with thier destinies as well. Once again I recomend this book for any father trying to keep his son on the straight and narrow or uncle, big brother or father figure

I bought this book for my 13yr old. He was hesitant but I think he may like it. If nothing else, he will likely value the lessons later. Some of them he might not get yet because he’s a pretty sheltered suburban kid but the lessons are universal.

Forget about the title. Harper has crafted a fabulous book that will appeal to nearly all teens — not just at-risk African-American boys. While the book speaks directly to African-American males, its smart yet cool approach to the problems that plague all teens, but particularly young people who are poor or members of a minority group, will also be a hit with girls and members of other beleaguered minority groups, as well. The language is laden with slang but intelligent, and both Harper and his extremely phat friends will make inroads where even caring teachers and parents might not. The book could easily have become sappy, but it never does.Harper’s inclusion of his celebrity friends and of full-color photographs of him partying with them might provoke some teen to read the book who might not at first been inclined to do so. It was another spot-on move by Harper. I am really grateful to him for providing young people with such a frank blueprint for growth.Students who might be Caucasian and affluent will still love the book’s message that everyone — even handsome, successful TV stars — sometimes feel lonely, have trouble approaching members of the opposite sex, and make mistakes. What about straight-A students bound for Yale? They will be attracted to Harper, who graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude. The school’s jocks will love that Harper was a college football hero. For the free spirits out there, Harper begins each chapter with a pithy quote from sources as disparate as the Persian poet Rumi, former President Bill Clinton, and rapper Andre 3000 (nee André Benjamin). Harper really has a hook for most of the cliques in American high schools.

I’m a fifty-year-old white guy who works in juvenile detention. For sometime now, I have enjoyed watching Hill Harper onscreen and have had respect for the kinds of roles he has taken. I said as much to a friend at work as we watched a movie about Tupac onthe the unit. She recommended this book to me. Even though I’m not young or, strictly speaking, I a “brotha,” I decided to give the book a read, and I’m delighted I did. I found many lessons I can share with the young men I work with in juvenile detention. Of course, I will recommend that they read the book for themselves once they are back in the community

I read this book and it was very encouraging. I work with the youth in my church and I presented this book to a high school senior to read. He told me he started reading the book and can not put it down. The book covered issues in his daily walk of life and issues he thought he was only thinking about were being discussed in the book. I decided to start giving a copy to every Male in high school to help guide them through some of the obsticles they will encounter in life as young men.

My 13-yr old grandson is reading this book to me and the advice in this book is really hitting home with him since it’s pretty much the same things I have been telling him. This is a young man who doesn’t like to read at all, but will volunteer to sit down for our reading sessions with this book. Hill not only has academic credentials but street cred too which hits it off with young black men. I recommend this book highly. Vivian, Aurora, CO

Im a white foster dad that puts my effort into understand and relating to the young men i get in my home frequently. Even though as a child myself I went to school in the projecfs of louisville, KY and was one of few kids of my race there. I was still able to go home to the suburbs at night so while i do understand what its like to be a minority in some ways I cant fully understand it all. I like to use this book to identify to the young men that education is key and that that is not just coming from me its coming from many other respected black people in our society, with very straight forward language. This book helps to squash some of the victim mentality and machismo issues that we have faced with the kids. I think it is a great resource along with a few others. I will be reading parts of it out loud with our newest young man that gets here tomorrow and is avaiable for adoption. I hope this book helps him see that what matters most is not the gucci belt he put on his christmas list but the brain he has in his head and the confidence in his worth as a compassionate and caring human.
