I felt that every page of this book was written for me and talking to me personally. This is a must read book for every business owner who wants to be successful personally as well as professionally. I certainly wish I had read it before building my businesses, as I feel I could have saved a great deal of unnecessary heartache. Don’t delay, start reading it today!

This book stands out as really honest, valuable and useful resource for anyone starting or who has been in business. There are so many self-named guru’s out there who claim to have an answer to get your business to be a successful. This isn’t one of them, but a book written by someone whose been in business, succeed, failed and succeeded again. The balance of looking at both the business and personal habits and mindset required to be successful in business is truly refreshing.

I ordered the kindle edition and also subsequently ordered a hard copy of the book because it was quite simply the best book about business, and life in general, that I have ever read.A lot of the content resonates with me and Chapter 3 in particular really hit home. I am now committed to approaching my business, and how that fits into my life, with a new mindset (quite something nearly 20 years after starting my business). Most of the books I’ve read are about success, motivation, processes, management and growth, but this book was a real breath of fresh air.

I loved this book! It is a book about mind and body. Entrepreneurship and start ups would benefit from understanding that to play the long game and run a sustainable business they have to be mentally and physically fit for business. It is also a great book for understanding resilience, bouncing back from set backs and how to connect with an audience, friends and colleagues.

I’m a follower of Penny’s and was keen to read this book. It hasn’t disappointed at all, it’s a very thoughtful consideration of how to run a small business in keeping with your own principles and building respectful relationships with other business owners.

The world is changing and so is the way we can choose to do business. Consider having a1-2-1 conversation about business in general … the personal aspects that don’t just affect the bottom line of your P & L, but also why looking after your business requires looking after yourself, both is a journey. It’s a wake-up call to those in business – solo/entrepreneur, or an interpreneur scaling the organisational ladder. It’s certainly a conversation I can relate to – one that shares the highs and the lows with a wise, trusted and, importantly, experienced friend who’s been there. Significantly you realise from the outset the author has only your best interests at heart. The content is not just about a personal journey you can associate with, but holds nuggets of wisdom that you may not have known before, and even if you did they will act as a critical reminder; to make a difference in this global 4IR world we have to be authentic, innovative and above all personal. “Business is Personal: Be the Leader of Your Life and Business” is a great read and a book I intend to revisit again in the future.

When you think you might be drowning or struggling to stay afloat in your business, understand that you are not alone. Everyone is in the same boat, or has been. Business is NOT plain sailing. Even Harrods started up as two blokes with a small barrow – they must have struggled to get things going and had their ups and downs. Remember that all big companies started off as little ones… one of the best things I learned from this book was PACE. Make sure you pace yourself. Don’t be in such a hurry and critically enjoy it… somehow. Even the bad times can be enjoyable so long as you understand what you are learning. Read Penny’s book and move forward with your head held high in your business.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, partially because I could relate to so much. The other reason was the reminder of Ecademy. If it hadn’t been for Ecademy I probably wouldn’t have met the love of my life, so thank you, Penny!

This book is a real reflection of Penny herself; caring, honest, authentic, giving, open, wholesome, generous and, well, brilliant. It covers some of the most important things that are rarely talked about when it comes to the entrepreneurial journey.Wherever you are in your business journey, read this book, and then keep it on hand to refer back to.

When you’re “out there on your own” (or at least that’s how it feels) this book helps you get your head around being a business owner and still a person. Your business is part of your life; and therefore “it’s personal”. Thank you Penny Power for writing this x

What a relief! Penny expertly gives permission to just be you and still succeed without having to pretend. Then she shows that the authenticity that results is a massive part of business success and happiness. This is the gift that Penny’s shares and I’ve ordered Business is Personal again for a friend who needs it just now.

Written with such heart. As a mum in business I was with Penny the entire way. She writes from her heart and reveals the internal goings on that from the outside you cannot see. As a mum who supports mums to balance their life in a way that supports them, I heard myself saying – yes – yes – yes. Nodding my head on every page. If you are a mum in business, this is another must read 🙂

Being a business owner is so different from being an employee. It impacts your sense of purpose as a person, your self-esteem, your sense of worth, so if the business is not doing well it has a huge impact on you emotionally. Penny has been through those highs and lows and in this book shares her experience, speaking straight from the heart with honesty. The emotion comes through the writing as if she is sitting opposite or even beside you with her arm round you, trying to help you. Lovely book. A must for any entrepreneur. Thank you Penny!

Penny’s book was a smack between the eyes. We work too hard, we don’t recognise when we are burning out, then we pay the price. Raw, powerful and so honest. I loved it. It makes us take a good look at the way we operate and then gives sound advice to work in a better way.

I’m a sole trader in the process of building my digital marketing agency and I had the privilege of meeting Penny and hearing her speak at an event recently.Penny Power has been on quite the journey, both professionally and personally. For anyone in business for themselves, this book is a must-read.Far from being the run of the mill ‘how to be a better business owner’ type of missive, Penny encourages you to reframe the way you look at your business, encouraging you to celebrate the personal connection you have with it. In a world that often gives us a snapshot view of other people’s ‘perfect’ lives, it’s easy to become demoralised and to feel a sense of shame for not being a wild success. Penny explains why, for her, allowing herself to admit to being broken meant she could rebuild, stronger and forge a greater number of genuine connections. In this book, she shows you how you can apply those lessons too.Especially for small businesses, you are your brand, you are your business. It doesn’t get much more personal than that.

‘Authenticity’ seems like just another business buzzword these days – stripped for parts like ‘creativity’, ‘quality’ and ‘mission’.Yet here we have a brutally authentic book – an eyewitness account from the business trenches – by someone who journeyed there AND made it back. Just.I’ve read hundreds of business books over the past 20 years, many of them insightful, practical and relevant. But this is the first that’s had anything useful to say about the emotional side of starting, building and running a business. I purchased the audiobook initially, but got annoyed with the amount of times I needed to stop listening so I could write something down. Now happily scribbling on the paper copy.Highly recommended.

Imagine you are walking alone, the going is tough on the muddy path. The wind is blowing against you and the rain is coming down hard. Each step you take seems to be getting harder. Then out of nowhere, someone comes alongside you, walks with you, and they share some stories from their journey. You simply listen as you both walk along the path. As you listen, you smile when you recognise a challenging time they had was like one that happened to you, or maybe a challenge you are dealing with now. They tell you what they did and how it helped them. You find you have some more energy and pick up the pace, you’re back on track. You look back down the path and they are gone, as suddenly as they appeared. This book is like a record of that encounter. In her book, Penny shares some of her journey with you in a personal and open way. I bought the Kindle version first but I am about to buy the paperback for easier reference and note taking.Thoroughly recommended.

Penny Power describes her story in plain language that belies its strength. The first part of the book seems overly simplistic, like a string of platitudes coloured by nostalgia. That first impression turns out to be deceptive. As the book goes on the learnings become deeper and the narrative more powerful. Penny shares her trials by fire and how she overcame failures and betrayals to become the businesswoman she is today. It’s a remarkable story of perseverance in the face of painful events and many hard-won lessons. Penny shows that you can be successful in business without losing your humanity. You can remain kind and caring without losing the plot but, as Penny says, “Don’t be a mug.”

From hearing the audible version and reading this book on my Kindle the impact of this book was a cumulative one as I finally ‘got it’ and as Penny makes clear by using examples from her own story that ‘Business is Personal ‘ and that sole practitioners like me will experience the greatest peace & impact when we act , think , speak and do things authentically as ourselves. My head & heart are now open to enjoying the greater awareness & freedom to give and be more of my individual self in my business and personal life. I found it well worth reading twice to let the key messages sink in and to reflect & learn how to apply them.
