Georgia in Crisis: Why it Matters Globally

The small but resilient nation of Georgia is at a crossroads. Once celebrated as a beacon of democracy and free markets in the Caucasus region, the country has witnessed a systematic erosion of its democratic values under the ruling party, Georgian Dream. What began as subtle shifts in governance has escalated into an open rejection of Georgia’s Western democratic trajectory, culminating in widespread civil unrest.

Here is what is happening in Georgia and why everyone needs to stand with us.

Dangerous Pivot Toward Russia

For years, Georgia was lauded for its embrace of free markets and democratic principles. But over the past two years, these achievements have been systematically dismantled by the Georgian Dream government.

It began in March 2023, when the ruling party introduced the “Foreign Agents Bill” targeting independent media and NGOs. Though public outrage forced the bill’s withdrawal, the government reintroduced similar legislation in April 2024, under the guise of the “Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence.” This law, widely condemned as a tool for repression, further stifled dissent and empowered the government to silence critical voices.

Then, in October 2024, Georgian Dream claimed a suspicious 54% victory in parliamentary elections — elections marred by voter intimidation and rigging. Opposition parties refused to take their seats, leaving the ruling party to govern unopposed.

Then, in a move that shocked the international community, Georgian Dream announced on November 28, 2024, that negotiations with the European Union would be suspended until 2028. This decision was an affront to Georgia’s constitutionally enshrined European aspirations and a devastating blow to its relationship with Western allies.

Adding insult to injury, Georgian Dream nominated Mikheil Kavelashvili, a pro-Russian former footballer and vocal critic of the West, for president. This action earned praise from Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose authoritarian policies have long threatened the region, but drew condemnation from Western leaders.

Georgia Resists

The Georgian people refuse to accept this descent into authoritarianism. On November 28, 2024, protests erupted in the capital, Tbilisi, and quickly spread to 32 other cities or towns. Tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets. But the government’s response has been brutal. Riot police have unleashed tear gas, water cannons, pepper spray, and rubber bullets on peaceful protesters. More than 300 people have been unlawfully detained, many of whom were beaten and are now in critical condition.

Let me reiterate: People are being beaten, persecuted, and arrested for protesting peacefully.

Special forces beat and detain protest participants every night. The detainees have bruises all over their bodies, plus facial injuries. And the riot police don’t shy away from attacking disabled people, pregnant women, or children.

Then, yesterday (December 4), the riot police started raiding the offices of the major opposition parties and resistance movements, taking their equipment for “inspection,” as well as beating and detaining their leaders.

Why This Matters to You, Too

Georgia’s struggle is not an isolated event. It is part of a global battle between authoritarianism and democracy — and democracy is better for liberty. What happens in Georgia sends a message to other nations: Will the world stand up for freedom, or will it allow oppression to prevail?

The Georgian people are doing their part, risking their lives to protect their rights. But they cannot do it alone. The international community has the power to make a difference. By donating, you can directly support Georgian protesters and amplify their message. And you can say, loudly and clearly: The world is watching, and democracy will not falter.

Georgia’s fight for democracy is a fight for all of us. It reminds us that freedom is fragile and must be defended wherever it is threatened. By standing with Georgia, we stand for the principles of liberty and justice.
