I thought ReGenerate would help me better understand my clients, my friends, and my family. Mostly, I wanted to understand Generation Z. I’m a Millennial, and I’ve grown up with lots of Generation X and Millennial cousins. Once their children and grandchildren started entering high school as Gen-Zers, I started to see differences in how my youngest cousins were viewing the world…and it was weird. My Generation Z cousins questioned a lot, including our family traditions and the religion they grew up with. They were more interested and concerned with politics and world issues than most of my other family members. They were inclusive and likely to champion diversity. They were all stars on social media, and they were using new apps before I even knew they existed. It wasn’t bad. It was just weird because…where did this all come from? How were they so different?I knew their families and teachers hadn’t taught them these things…it was just ingrained in them. I loved them and I loved that they were intellectual, tech-savvy, accepting, concerned, and not afraid of change…I just didn’t understand how they got to be this way. And as someone who feels the need to understand people, it was bothering me. What I needed (and I didn’t even know it) was to look at them from a generational perspective. When I got the book, my question was almost immediately answered when I read, “…each generation has a distinct social or cultural identity influenced by large-scale trends and events that took place during its members’ formative years.” And that’s when I realized that I had never stopped to reflect on all the events that Generation Z experienced growing up. I flipped to the overview chart in the center of the book and had an “ah-ha” moment.I went from, “Why are they like that?” to “This makes total sense!” in a matter of minutes, and then I just had to read the rest. The stories, scenarios, challenges, and questions Jessica Stollings has poured into this book create a really nice flow, and I discovered so many wonderful ways that each generation is different. I have a better understanding of how I can manage my relationships with other generations, and I’m even more interested to see how the world transforms from generation to generation.

The difference between success and failure for an organization can be a razor-thin line, and even small “gaps” in vision, communication and performance can have devastating effects. Nowhere is the risk of “gaps” more present than in the area of generational divide – where workers can often feel as if their co-workers are from another planet.Today’s leaders must understand how to systematically design environments that both reduce friction AND harness the often untapped dynamism that exists between generations – and flip an area of risk into a strength.Jessica Stollings’ book is an eye-opener and a must-read for any leader who grasps how important the generational issue is today, and desires real-world, practicable solutions to effectively implement change in their organization. Warmly and colorfully-written, ReGenerate provides a clear, step-by-step walkthrough of the critical issues every leader faces, and a guide to solving them.

When we understand the what and why (among other things) for generational differences, we can better understand our workforce and anyone we interact with. We can also understand ourselves better when we realize the generational influences. I use Stollings book as a reference in my leadership toolbox. After reading her first book and then seeing Jessica in person, I could not wait to get a copy of on ReGenerate and it has exceeded my expectations. This book may use generational challenges as its launching pad, but I can tell you that as a former executive, the wisdom shared has mass appeal for anyone wanting to build a high performing team. Much like she does when she speaks, Jessica demonstrates a unique ability to balance story-telling, research, and humor to drive home points from which many of us shy away. This book is amazing in every way; however, joining the authors book club to hear her additional insights and ask her questions was so insightful. I love how she strategically had a variety of generations in the book club together and as she posed questions to us we could hear feedback from the various generations even from book club. Can’t say enough about this book. Very valuable tool for all leaders toolkit!

“REGENERATE is more than a must-read; it’s a must-act. Stollings doesn’t try to impress readers with her vast knowledge through protracted analysis. Instead, she sprinkles her most relevant knowledge across the pages in order to impress *upon* readers the importance of finding their own solutions to issues of generational dissonance in relationships and the workplace. Of particular help are the “bridging strategies” she unpacks to turn challenges into opportunities and the questions for reflection to jumpstart that process for the reader. This is more than a handbook for achieving “generational transition”; it’s an inspiration for creating generational transformation.
