Has some things mentioned in book that I wouldn’t have thought about such as making a voice recording before parent dies. I really miss my mom’s voice and that would have been wonderful to have. I have already made a folder for funeral pre-planning etc. I gave the book to my daughter so she could read it and think about items she wants clarified or whatever before I go. A good overall planning guide for those who haven’t started that discussion with their children. Not a boo-hoo book at all.

I’ve read a few other books about losing a mother and this is one of the most concise books on loss and grief that I’ve read. My mama died 14 years ago and as Ty stated several times throughout, the grief never really leaves it just changes form. Somehow Ty managed to capture all of my exact thoughts and feelings as I continue to create a “new normal” in the absence of my mother. I appreciate her willingness to open her heart to share her experience. I’ve found myself having to offer suggestions on grief to a lot of friends and this is a book I’ll be buying for others. Lastly, while she speaks about losing her mom, this book can apply to any loss because I found myself sometimes writing in my grandparents names in various places.

This was such a needed companion when my grandmother passed away. It’s the companion who talks you through the not so unique experience of losing a loved one. I have reread it several times- first go round required breaks for tissues or just time in general. Highly recommend!

I love the tone that Alexander writes in, this book helped me accept the loss of my mother. It also helped me come to terms with the guilt I had for so long. I felt like I was having a conversation with Alexander. Every experience with loss of a parent is unique but I identified with this book. ‘Things I Wish I Knew…’ is a book that I would recommend to anyone who has experienced the loss of a parent, I would also read it again.

Losing a parent can be surprisingly terrible, even if the relationship wasn’t as close as the author had with her mom. I wasn’t sure i related to her story, but found myself drawn in, and somewhat comforted by, her courageous honesty about loss and grief. Regardless of our own stories of grief, this sense of loss is universal. This book is full of the wisdom that just might get you back to the land if the living, and finding your joy and gratitude again .

Ty Alexander fills a giant hole that benefits from her own experiences. Thanks Ms. Alexander for being published with your helpful insights. Excellent book.

This was one of the this most inspiring reads of the fall. This was more than a book on coping with loss, it was a memoir. My mother is still here with me, reading this book my Ty Alexander made me want to hug her tighter… and listen to her family stories. I don’t care if she wants to talk for six minutes or sixty – I hold the line. I cherish her for all of my friends, who cannot pick up the phone and dial heaven.Thank you for penning this. I lost my mother 1 year ago to cancer, and when a friend knew I was going through a rough grief wave, she recommended this book. It took me a few months to get through because it’s so honest and therapeutic that I needed to let Ty’s words marinate. I cried, laughed, and shouted while reading this book. It has helped me to not be “the only one without a mom” and I’m just so glad I read it. Best part is that it’s written with flavor and black girl magic sprinkled on top. If you’ve lost your mother, this is a must read!

I gave you this rating, because I am also grieving the loss of my mother, it’s been 6 months since she passed and it still doesnt feel real. I was with her when she passed and performed CPR on her for 18 minutes I am an EMT and I see death in my line of work everyday, but when it’s your mom lying there and your pumping her chest screaming at her to wake up it hits your soul in a way that it will never be repaired…although I saw her leave this world I cannot accept that shes really gone. Your book has helped me understand that there are steps one must go through and it is never going to go away but one day it will be easier. I do alot of my griefing on the way to work that’s when it hits me. I just had my son 3 months ago she did get to here his heartbeat and know he was a boy before she died and she was the best MiMi ever and it just doesnt seem fair but I always knew she would never meet my children she had heart problems and diabetes and she struggled with it for years. Any ways I just wanted you to know that your book is helping me I have read it but is still look back at it every now and then as a reminder.

Nothing hits you like the death of your mum, whether sudden or expected. Sadly mine was unexpected in a tragic accident earlier this year involving police, paramedics, coroners and an inquest. This book came out at a time where I was searching for support and answers and I felt no one that hadn’t been through this or at least lost their mum understood.I really didn’t want to finish this book, which was difficult because it’s under 200 pages and could be finished in a day or two. I follow Ty on Insta and always admired her openness and honesty, how she writes so eloquent in the description of her experience, so honest and frank I found to be relatable, soothing and most importantly as I go through my grief, supportive and understanding. From my unaddressed feelings, endless difficulty in functioning ‘as normal’, disappointment in friends and family, dealing and coping with an accidental death – and a mother’s death in general, Things I Wish I Knew has equipped me to grow through it (even if undoubtedly I stumble many times) and I want to thank Ty for having the energy to put pen to paper to share her story and positively inspire the rest of us to grow through it too.

I bought it at an airport before a flight home. What a great read. The only thing i was a little put off by was the cursing a few times and the repetition of certain expressions but i learned many lessons from the book and it serves as a great example of what to do while you have your mom still alive or not. It takes you through every stage, the author really did put her heart in this book. I actually have gifted it to a few friends as well. You won’t regret buying it…

I received my book this evening & finished it a little bit ago & WOW!!!!Ty has opened her heart and poured it out on just about every page for us, in a very raw & open way which I love! She shares what she has experienced & experiences daily and I found myself having several “lightbulb moments” while reading. She says the things that so many of us are afraid to say, are afraid to face, afraid to acknowledge or are afraid to do… that so many of us need to hear, see, say or do.Ty lets us know that we are not alone in feeling what we feel during our personal grieving processes and that our feelings are very valid, very real and that they are OK! And screw whomever tries to tell us otherwise(YAAASS!!!🙌🏾).This book should be on every shelf in every household across the globe! Its one of those books you can revisit over and over again for strength, for encouragement, to cope & make it through the tough times, for understanding & so much more.I won’t spoil it by revealing anymore & I hope I didn’t give away too many details already but I will say one last thing…YOU ALL NEED TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK!! Having joined this club two years ago I found myself struggling with my mom’s death. I thought I had it under control but it started getting difficult so I saw this book and decided to give it a try. Even though our stories are different it helped to have another person explain how she felt through it and make sense of some of the feelings I was having. She has a good way of making you laugh too. Especially the bird story!!!

I carried this book literally everywhere I went including international vacations but was scared to read it because I was scared about opening up an emotional pandora’s box. Then I lost a dear friend and in the middle of a sleepless night I opened it. I AM SO GLAD I DID. Ty simply tells her story in a way we can all relate. She maintains her signature wit and invites us to expand our perspective on life and loss. AT a time when I couldn’t talk to anyone, Ty spoke straight to my heart and I actually laughed through my tears and finally get some sleep.

I am fortunate to not have lost a parent, but this book is so much more than just a manual on how to grieve. There are poignant nuggets of wisdom both woven throughout the book and summarized at the end of each chapter for how to be a better friend, daughter, mother, and person. Ty’s relationship with her mother is a true love story, one told in an intimate writing style that makes it seem like you and Ty are meeting up over coffee (or a cocktail!).

This book is more than just coping with the death of your own mother. It is about knowing it is okay to be mad. It is okay to cry. It is okay to not want to deal with some folks, especially the ones who want to force you to see they understand with their programmed condolences. I still have my mother, but I lost my brother to cancer. TY spoke all of the words I felt in my first few years but could not express because I did not know how and did not want to deal with because I had been raised to not be emotional. This book is not your standard self help book. This book is your real rap raw friend who lets you know what you are feeling means something, and you are not alone but it is okay to feel that way some days.

When I think of home,_________________________________After twenty years of anguish, someone could relate and articulated, what I prized possession I once was. The honesty shared in her text reminded me of a cockatoo I once had as a child, and the encouragement of freedom of thought unencumbered by any headwinds, soaring in the undercurrent beneath her wings, and as I write this, I also remembered the clipping of my birds wings, I was told it was so he wouldn’t, fly away, once let him in the house. I believed his wings were clipped twice, something about the process I didn’t like, I think it was taking my bird into such cold room and seeing the examinations on that cold stainless steel table, of course I never saw the actual clippings, but I knew something about the vet’s office or to the phrase wing clippings, hell I hated when my mom clipped my nails, it hurt. My wings healed they grow back. I’m reminded of the opening song in The Wiz, but I’m glad to know that it’s there, this feeling that we have, don’t lose the feeling that we had. Home hasn’t always easily remembered that tenderly. Things I wish I knew before my mother died, knocked down walls I had no idea were there. The best thing about the book is you feel SO connected to the author! She writes the book in a way that makes you feel like she is sitting in the room next to having a personal convo. Its so comforting! It helps you remember that you are NOT alone in your grief. Everyone has lost someone so everyone can relate no matter who it is that you have lost. The hole you feel in your heart is in fact an experience that others can relate to. The love and adoration she has for her mother is so clear and so beautiful. Bravo to this author that can capture human connection and emotion using words on a page! Get this book….and def recommend it to a friend who needs it!

Really a great deal of wisdom but I suggest anyone more than 40 or who has a problem with blue language start page 97, and when you finish the book go back to the beginning if you can take the language The reviews I read on Amazon were correct that, but I am very pleased and grateful that I read the book

I read this beautiful book in two days! I couldn’t more like I didn’t want to put it down. I find nothing really lessens my grief and the heartbreaking loss of my Mom but this book helped me to know I’m not alone and normal for feeling this way. Thank you Ty Alexander!

This book is great! I lost my mom 3 months ago and the grief process is…difficult is putting it lightly. This book is helping me understand that it’s ok for me to be mad, or depressed because it’s all apart of my process. I’ve never lost anyone prior to my mom so my emotions attached to death were foreign to me. Ty’s book has helped me to understand that what I feel or don’t feel is ok. Thank you Ty for being so honest and raw in this book.Maria

I have lost my best friend, my mother also. Ty describes so many of the emotions and fears without being preachy. I finished this beautiful book in one day. Unfortunately my circle of great friends have lost their wonderful moms too, each one of these angels is getting a copy of this great book. Thank you Ty.

This book has help me understand many things about the loss of my mom, who also died of cancer like the author’s mom. I feel like it has helped me in the healing process. There’s a lot of similarities in my life with the author’s life.

Thanks Ty for being so real. You captured my attention intitally with your mom’s photo, your book title, and Chestertown. Thank you for the connection as a college student in your town. I know your family and so proud and pleased that you did not sugar coat your feeling. Losing my mother to cancer and being the splitting image of her as the saying goes has been hard for me. For you it was the awesome Eastern shore crab cakes for me it was mom’s wings and collard greens ! I laughed and cried as I read your book and thank God for giving you the talent snd endurance to share Denny with all of us. Beautiful she was and beautiful she is in you. Cancer can drive us to face the challenge of something and strive to beat something!! Love and continued success for you….Veronica (Formerly Veronica Sisco), Houston, TX

“Things I wish I knew Before My Mom Died” is an excellent book to help move there the stages of coping with loss. I am a social worker and understand the stages of grief. However, Ty Alexander book helped me realize we all deal with grief differently and that’s okay. Ty lives in her truth and that’s what makes the book authentic. It truly helped me get through this first holiday season without my day.
