Francine finally gave us a voice, a playbook on how to navigate corporate America as Black Women. For someone who has just stepped into the corporate space, this book was very timely. Francine dropped gems from beginning to end. What resonated with me most is not sitting back and waiting on anyone to direct and/or guide my career path. I am my biggest advocate, bring others on the ride for support, but I am steering the ship! So grateful for this gift of being seen, heard, and validated. Thank you, Francine for your vulnerability, courage, and wisdom! The gift that keeps on giving….♥️

Francine has taken her experience, extracted the lessons from them, and created ACTIONABLE steps for us to take in order to get the most out of our careers. As someone coming from a non-traditional background in a new (more respected) industry, I now know what to expect, how to navigate challenging experiences, and how to take ownership of my career EARLY.Some of the messaging can be repetitive, however, I believe the author did it to help us process the information and fully grasp its importance.I would highly recommend this book to those transitioning and to those looking to take their power back.

Francine had provided black women professionals a career guide of sound advice, wisdom, and heartfelt personal accounts of navigating one’s career in Corporate America. While I see so much of myself in these pages, I also appreciate the additional nuggets of insights I can apply to my future career aspirations. Thanks for sharing what will be a great addition to my career library and one that I will revisit multiple times in the future. This is a MUST READ.

I appreciate there’s a book written from a black woman’s perspective on how to succeed in the workplace. Due to biases and predispositions, there are strategies to move up in the workplace that won’t work for black women. This book goes you the tools you need to increase your power and move through the ranks.

Once in a rare while among all the noise that acts as knowledge you will find a book that offers rare insight and a glimpse of truth. When it does appear it shares a perspective you did not realize you were missing, creates a new set of questions eager to be asked but gives you something we all need more of these days – hope. Hope that there is a path to make things at work better and hope that we can find ways to strengthen our organizations through equity and talent. “Please, Sit Over There” is such a book and Francine Parham delivers. At a time when most organizations are flailing to understand engagement and commitment especially amongst diverse populations, when most companies are facing equity challenges particularly amongst Black Woman who are often the most marginalized, this book offers truth, insights and answers that can better any individual, leader, team and organization. Take the time to read it but better still to understand and glean from it. You might be uncomfortable but you will better for it and your people will thank you.

This book was moving for me in several ways. First, it reaffirmed that I’m not alone in my struggles, as many of the stories she told about her experiences in corporate America strongly resonated with me. But the other aspect was the tips and actionable advise on how to overcome those challenges and succeed. It really gives you almost step by step instruction on the various things you can do, which is super helpful when you are feeling defeated, confused and driven all at the same time. Warning, have your pen or highlighter handy as you will be writing in this “playbook”! Thank you Francine for reminding me about my power and all the various ways I can use it to stay relevant, informed and aligned with my value system, regardless of the organization I’m in.

Please Sit Over There: How to Manage Power, Overcome Exclusion, and Succeed as a Black Woman at Work by Francine Parham is a masterclass for people of color in corporate. I wish I had this book at the early stages of my career. So far, I read this book twice; it covers many lessons I have learned from my career journey and gave me a fresh perspective and new insight.Francine Parham did not just write a good book; she created a playbook with actionable steps and advice on navigating power in an organization at all levels. This book serves as a guide to help people of color to strategize how to propel forward, plan out their careers, and grow within an organization. ** Make sure to have your pen or highlighter handy to note the gems to hold on to!I have purchased this book three times for several direct reports and mentees. What I love most about this book is it applies to anyone junior to executive level. This book serves as a playbook for not only women but men of color as well. So happy to share this long-overdue review!!Thank you for this gift of a book, Francine!!.

I purchased this book last year for several early executives and managers. The title caught my interest and I suspected that it would make a good companion to books from Minda Harts that I had also gifted to many.I also purchased a copy for myself around that time, but had not yet read. I admit that I assumed that as a senior executive in my organization who provides a lot of advice, mentoring and public talks on how to navigate spaces of power, the book would be less relevant to me. I was wrong.Francine has written a book that is as insightful and applicable to the most senior executives, as it is to those just starting out. Not only does she deliver concrete and actionable advice on how to navigate power in an organization at all levels, she provides guidance to leaders on how to provide real support to Black women and historically excluded people in the workplace.I am now gifting this book not just to mentees, but to colleagues who sit around the Executive leadership table with me.Thank you for this gift of a book, Francine.

Francine Parham’s book, “Please Sit Over There” lives up to its chilling title by providing ways to succeed as a Black woman at work. Ms. Parham begins by defining true power. It is NOT the task-driven mentality that women are socialized to believe power comes from merely working harder. It’s about being strategic and building a network of sponsors and allies. It’s the network noun, not the verb. Ms. Parham provides personal stories that illuminate her wise words. I wish I had this reference source earlier in my career. Fortunately, it’s not too late as I help women find their voice in today’s workplace to achieve personal and professional goals. Although Black women are named in the tile, this is a book for white male leaders as well. There’s a bountiful resource of leadership in women of color. Championing their success is in the best interest of all organizations. Looking forward to the day when our allies find us sitting next to them and not “over there.” Thank you Francine Parham for sharing your strategies for success.

Francine is your Fairy Godmother in the workplace…if you are a corporate black girl (woman). In “Please Sit Over There”, is a must read, or listen. She breaks down the strategies, behind the strategies of the workplace. The curtain is pulled all the way back. She doesn’t shy away from explicitly sharing her experiences that many of us can relate to or share. She provides actual “to-do’s” and not fluff tips. Things you MUST do to ensure your place, your stair step or even lateral move while you plan your destiny. This book should be given to all black women business students…I would venture to say any black women that wants to succeed in their respective field—needs this book.I wish I had this book 15years ago…but I have it now and will continue to reference the “MUST do’s” daily, monthly, quarterly and annually. It tops the Black Girl’s corporate bible list.Thank you Francine for being a truth teller, our Fairy Godmother of the Workplace.

Beyond the lip service we are hearing in corporate, this book contains tools for deep and lasting change. It should make you uncomfortable to read this – even the title is uncomfortable. But it is through discomfort and REAL information – straight talk – that we have an opportunity to grow. This book helped me change – and be better. I highly recommend it. She explains how to establish expectations and hold leaders accountable. She explains why one should be skeptical of “bring your whole self to work” initiatives, which often end up marginalizing women of color.Parham offers guidance on how to build strategic allies within an organization.
