Robyn Rocks! And so does this book.

I remember when Robyn shared an early draft of this in 2013 with our book club. This book contains so much great advice and direction for building culture. The improvements in the last years has resulted in a superior product everyone in a startup C-suite should read.

Easy to read but surprisingly deep & insightful look at corporate culture

Business books on strategy, habits, and success seem to be a dime a dozen. But finding something that details so many workplace culture issues while providing concrete ways of dealing with them is incredibly rare. And that is why I love Happy at Work.Robyn Garrett is a workplace leadership and culture expert on TikTok, making fun and insightful content that looks at foibles and serious issues in a light and approachable way that manages to always teach a lesson. That approach translates well into this book. Starting with an introduction that looks at ‘how we got here’, the book dives into your leadership, team and organization – there is truly something here for every issue. One of the best things for me is the systematic approach to breaking down problems and building up solutions. Each issue starts with a goal, harmful habit and successful strategy. Then it looks at what’s gone wrong to put our businesses in this place, an approach to dealing with that, and finally actions to take to achieve the initial goal. There are tables that break down more complex situations in a nuanced way.As I read I kept bookmarking things that resonated with me – but when I looked back I realized I’d bookmarked over half the items! That is because while there are a hundred issues explored, they are all common things anyone who has been a leader at any level with have encountered in businesses of any size. One little detail I loved in the digital version I was glad also appeared in the physical copy was having each tip start on a new page. Seems small, but with the consistent formatting of having things line up in a way that lets you jump to the start of a new tip, everything flows more easily. My wife has already taken my paperback copy to explore after I kept sharing quotes as I read, and people at work are looking forward to checking the book out.As I was flipping through sections I was reminded of Atomic Habits because it felt simultaneously like everything was common sense and yet I learned a ton. Garrett discusses safety and it seems obvious until you think of how few companies truly embrace safety culture over simple compliance – and how much that matters.

    Practical tips to improve workplaces

Unlike other management books, this book is full of actionable steps managers and leaders can take today to make employees happier at work! I particularly appreciated the sections on recognition and rewards & support mental health — these are areas most managers want to improve, but struggle to figure out how. A great reference book for new and old managers alike!

Book contains actual things you can do RIGHT NOW

As a new CEO, this book has been a life-saver. We’re a relatively small business, and I’ve been self-employed for 30 years. All my HR training has been on the job. In her book, Robyn gives you actual things you can do RIGHT NOW that will improve your relationships with your staff. I have 48 people who have benefitted from me following her on Tik Tok and now reading this book. Thanks so much for this wisdom!
