Get this book! Mita Mallick is a true storyteller. This book is so insightful and provides a plethora of tips that can help one become a more inclusive colleague, leader, and friend. The book is well written and the format lends itself to personal reflection and ways to grow in your pursuit of inclusion. It was a quick read and I could not put my highlighter down. There are so many valuable nuggets in this book. Some key takeaways for me are as follows:1. Build and invest in cross-cultural relationships (continual investment will drive deeper understanding).2. 3 Pillars to becoming a more inclusive leader (Access, Amplify, and Advocate)3. Becoming a more inclusive leader is a continuous journey.4. Inclusive leaders stand up for what is right and an inclusive culture cannot survive without them. This means taking action against what you absolutely will not tolerate.5. People of color need more sponsors instead of more mentors.6. Always ask what support someone wants or needs, no group of people are monolithic.7. Take accountability as a leader when you create harm, apologize, and educate yourself as to why your behavior was harmful.8. Stay committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.Thank you Mita and I look forward to future books, articles, and musings.

A powerful book that addresses and debunks 13 myths about inclusion, such as “I am all for diverse talent. As long as they are good.” Mita shares powerful and relatable stories on how these myths play out in real life and in the workplace and why they’re harmful. And she also shares practical steps on how to move from good intent, tokenization, and performative allyship to having real and positive impact to create a more diverse and inclusive environment.

Everyone talks about the importance of “Diversity and Inclusion” in the workplace, but no one tells you how to actually implement it. Some of the tips in this book are so simple – it’s shocking we don’t do them already. As a female leader at a big company, I related to so many of these stories. Many of us have asked for a raise and received a condescending response from a male boss. How many mentorship programs have we been involved with that just faded into the sunset over time? And one of the biggest issues for me and my co-workers is maternity leave. A few weeks of paid (or unpaid) leave isn’t the support working parents need. It was great to see the author finally address that.Every manager of people should read and learn from this book!

This book reads like you are talking to a good friend about corporate BS. Myth #6 “Why are you Asking for a Raise? You and your husband make more than enough money.” is exactly what I had experienced while working for a large company. Mallick’s research based analysis is what I wish I had when I experienced this in my own career. She proves insights on the importance of working mothers and how corporations can become an ally instead of penalize us. Now as I lead my own organization I will make sure to focus on inclusion on all aspects of my organization, I bought extra copies to share with my team.

This isn’t your typical business book – you know, the one that may provide some theoretical solutions to DEI and belonging in the workplace without leaving you with any concrete ones. Mita’s genius is in how she not only frames the issues but provides practical, workable ways to integrate them immediately into your workplace while simultaneously forcing you to interrogate what you’ve experienced, thought, or done in the past. Easily one of the most impactful books I’ve read this year! I encourage anyone who’s serious about actual change in the workplace to get a copy of their own, and then buy one for anyone else who may need it.

This book is both deeply researched and highly relatable. Parts of it read like an NPR story that I’d share with a friend with anecdotes of employers getting things very wrong and also making things right again. Really love the specificity. Found it to be a page turner.Must read sections include: creating a DEI space for white men and lessons on apologizing, hint, it starts with accepting that you’ve made a mistake or done something racist, and step by step how to apologize in a meaningful way.

I’ve read many books on the topic of DEI, and I’ve never found one (until now) that both presents the problems, breaks them down into digestible parts, AND presents practical and implementable solutions. This book should be required reading for any business leader, right next to Good to Great and Start With Why.

Whether you are interested in DEI or not you’ll want to pick up this book immediately. I especially recommend it for these two audiences:- For business leaders who have been looking for a “safe space” to have their DEI questions addressed in an actionable way, this is as close as you’re going to get. From from the comfort and safety of your home, you can read about the mistakes other leaders have made, and get educated about the common myths about DEI. And you’ll learn – from an experienced professional – of opportunities to do better by your employees, stakeholders, and your business.- I’d also recommend the book for people who work in DEI. Reading a collection of common challenges and interactions that Mita has experienced in her career was validating! Reimagine Inclusion offers thoughtful responses to the uninformed comments and thoughtless remarks that often come from executives and would-be leaders. Mita’s takeaways and questions in each chapter open ideas for further engagement.Reimagine Inclusion is an easy read because of Mita’s knack for storytelling. But don’t let the conversational feel of the book fool you. Each chapter is full of ways to challenge traditional modes of thinking, ideas to improve your business, and opportunities for leaders to bust common DEI myths.Reimagine Inclusion should be in at the front of the business section of every library and book store. And in in your office bookshelf.

I was impressed by this book and had to share. Here are 3 reasons to read this now: 1) It is a page turner. Mallick gives appropriate weight to the topic at hand, but effortlessly weaves in personal stories, relevant research, and pop culture references that keep you reading chapter after chapter. 2) It makes you rethink your own assumptions. Just try to get through Chapter 1 without wondering where your assumptions came from and how you can change them. 3) This book says what needs to be said. So many people want to hear their own voice on this hot topic of inclusion, yet their words just surf the surface. Not this book. It bravely addresses the issue head on. Now the question is, are we going to take the advice?

In most companies, DE&I is a highly sensitive topic that can be very awkward and uncomfortable to discuss. It’s understandable because there’s so much that goes into creating an inclusive work environment and often times people who are not from historically marginalized backgrounds struggle to feel comfortable with those who are.Enter Mita Mallick’s book. An approachable, conversational, informative work that makes it easy for leaders to understand this important topic through the lens of someone who has tons of lived & learned experience with it.But it’s not just for those who might not feel 100% comfortable with how to approach DE&I in their workplace, it’s also a fantastic read for those who champion it. There is tons of fresh ideas and lightbulb moments that had me thinking, “it would have been great if we tried that here” or “that would have been a perfect approach there.”As our world gets more connected and our networks become more global, this is one book everyone should read. Business will be better off for it.
